Area Musicians, Dancers, Poets, and Puppeteers Perform at Valborg Theatre on Howard Street, Saturday, May 5

The Mountain Laurels

April 26, 2012. Experience an evening of the arts at Appalachian’s Valborg Theatre on Saturday, May 5, as part of the annual AURA (Artists United Reaching out for Academics) performance. Hosted by Two Rivers Community School, the 7 p.m. show will feature artists, musicians, dancers and a silent auction.  The box office opens at 6:00 and refreshments will be on sale prior to the show and during intermission.

The evening’s diverse performers—all artists local to the High Country– include EYA! Afrolachian Drum and Dance Troupe, the Mountain Laurels, Spring House Choir, Travis Boswell, ASU Dance Alumni and Faculty, and a special performance of Dinosaurumpus by Two Rivers’ K-2 students with Vanessa Van Valin.

Vanessa Van Valin (of the local band the Henhouse Thieves) will warm things up by leading the Two Rivers Kindergarten-2nd grades in a musical interpretation of Tony Mitton’s endearing children’s book Dinosaurumpus

A band of women on strings, the Mountain Laurels will perform a variety of music.  Their repertoire includes an eclectic hybrid blend of Celtic, Old English, Folk, Renaissance and Chamber music.

The evening will continue as the Spring House Choir shares their joyful noise, Dance Faculty and Alums from Appalachian State University perform a set of short, original pieces of dance choreography, and Travis Boswell entertains the audience with his unique brand of storytelling.

Eya!

The performance will come to an energized close with Eya! Afrolachian Drum & Dance.  Eya! performs traditional music and dance from a variety of countries across the African continent, the Caribbean, and occasionally the Arabic world.  The group also performs contemporary musical works in a Pan-Global style.

This event is sponsored by Blue Ridge Learning Centers and all proceeds benefit arts programming at Two Rivers Community School.
