June 24, 2013. It’s official. AppalCART has moved operations from Winkler’s Creek Road to its new 23,000-square-foot facility on N.C. 105 Bypass.

“It’s a nice step [from the 10,000-square-foot facility on Winkler’s Creek Road]. One we are looking forward to for a number of years. We are delighted to be in here and looking forward to its completion,” AppalCART Director Chris Turner said. “It’s nice to be in new space. [The mechanics] will be operating with a lot more elbow room than they usually have, and they can actually work on three or four buses at the same time.”

The project, funded by federal stimulus monies, has a budget of $5.5 million, and Turner said he is “hoping” it comes under budget after the finishing touches are complete.

While all vehicles are leaving from the new facility on the bypass, Turner added that some paving, lighting and parking-lot striping still needs to be completed. The new facility includes solar panels and a rainwater collection system that supplies water to the wash bay for vehicles and for flushing commodes throughout the building.

A ribbon cutting is scheduled for August 2, Turner said.
