Appalachian’s Catherine J. Smith Gallery Presents Events with Art Index CEO Joy Glidden Sept. 12

Sept. 5, 2012. Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University will present a series of events with Joy Glidden, CEO of Art Index Inc., on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Glidden’s visit to campus will include a film screening of the PBS series “Art Index TV,” followed by a question and answer session and public lecture with the arts entrepreneur.

The film will be screened in Room 208 Wey Hall from 11 a.m. to noon, and the lecture on entrepreneurship in the arts will be presented at 6:30 p.m. in Room 114 Belk Library and Information Commons.

These events are free and open to the public.

Glidden’s talk will address artistic challenges and collaborations for artists and communities, including innovative components of public art ordinance, from the DUMBO Arts Festival – which draws more than a million spectators – to the PBS co-production of “Art Index TV.”

“Art Index TV” is an informative and engaging television series of half-hour shows about contemporary artists and the business that surrounds their practice. It places contemporary art in context, demystifies and illuminates its creative process, and articulates the ways in which it impacts our culture at large. “Art Index TV” features artists and art professionals who demonstrate the knowledge and the breadth of artistic practice in the region, the nation and across the globe.

A native of Canada, Glidden immigrated to New York City in 1987. She was an active visual and performance artist, but works today as a producer, director, curator, arts administrator, lecturer and advocate for local arts communities. Glidden founded the DUMBO Arts Center and the DUMBO Art Under the Bridge festival in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served as the executive director from 1997–2006. Later in 2006, she relocated from Brooklyn to New Orleans where she contributed to the cultural plan for the city, founded the organization Contemporary Visual Arts Association of New Orleans and was the director of Louisiana ArtWorks from 2007–10. She recently completed a term as the national vice president of programming for ArtTable.

She returned to New York in 2010 and serves as the CEO of Art Index Inc. and executive producer of “Art Index TV,” a PBS co-production.

The Catherine J. Smith Gallery is closed for renovations through August 2013, but programming continues across campus and in the community this year. Information on these and other events can be found at www.art.appstate.edu/cjs or call 828-262-7338.
