Feb. 20, 2012. BOONE — Kicking off their 2012 season, the Appalachian Roller Girls of Boone are playing the Speed Demons of Charlotte on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Metrolina Trade Expo.
Both teams launched in 2010 and are expecting a good match of skills and game strategy. According to Katie Betz, an Appalachian Roller Girl and Boone native, the Speed Demons should prove to be a tough team to play.
“We are stoked about starting the season back up and have been working extremely hard on our fitness level as well as our game strategy to counter the Speed Demons. We hear they are a fit team both physically and mentally, and so are we.”
The Appalachian Roller Girls finished their 2011 season with eight wins and three losses. During that time the team has gained new skaters. For some girls this will be their second bout ever.
“I am looking forward to my second bout! It should be a fun ride and I couldn’t do it without the help of my derby sisters. They have taught me a lot along the way and are dedicated to the sport,” said Corey Holiday, Appalachian Roller Girl and biology instructor at CCC&TI’s Watauga campus.
The teams will play at 7:00 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m., Feb. 25 at Metrolina Trade Expo, located at 7100 Statesville Rd. in Charlotte. Tickets in advance are $10, $14 game day and can be purchased online at racecityrollerderby.com.
