Appalachian Philharmonia Performs Sept. 30

Sept. 24, 2012. The Appalachian Philharmonia performs works by Handel, Bach and Debussy on Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall at Appalachian State University.

The philharmonia is conducted by Dr. Chung Park. Guest soloist is flutist Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham. Both are members of the Hayes School of Music faculty at Appalachian. The philharmonia is a faculty-student collaborative within the music school.

The program features selections from George Frederic Handel’s “Water Music,” Bach’s “Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B Minor, BWV 1067” and Claude Debussy’s “Le Mer” (The Sea).

Park is director of orchestral activities at Appalachian. He conducts the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra, Appalachian Philharmonia and Appalachian Opera Theatre.

Park is quickly establishing himself amongst the finest of the current generation of American conductors. Eminent composer Steve Reich described his conducting as “revelatory” and called him “a young conductor to keep an ear and eye on.”

His primary musical studies were completed at the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Miami, where he received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree as a student of renowned conductor and composer Thomas Sleeper. Park was the recipient of the Presser Foundation Music Prize, the UM Alumni Association Student of Distinction Award and was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda music honors fraternity while at the University of Miami. Additionally, Park studied viola in Hannover, Germany, with Hatto Beyerle of the Alban Berg Quartet.

Schneeloch-Bingham teaches flute and directs the flute ensemble in Appalachian’s Hayes School of Music. She is a member of Harmonia Baroque, an early music ensemble featuring period instruments. Her duo with flutist Leslie Marrs, Dúo Pelirroja, tours annually and presents dynamic, team-taught master classes.

Schneeloch-Bingham has performed with the Western Piedmont Symphony, Salisbury Symphony, Tallahassee Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Kingsport Symphony, North Carolina Symphony and Appalachian Philharmonia.
