Appalachian Celebrates Earth Day and More

April 20, 2012. BOONE — One day isn’t enough. So in addition to celebrating Earth Day, Appalachian State University has planned more than 30 activities throughout April to promote the environment, environmental stewardship and sustainability.  Activities range from educational to service-based with most open to the public.

Participate in the student organization Colleges Against Cancer Relay for Life Friday, April 20, at Duck Pond Field beginning at 6 p.m. The event continues through 6 a.m. on Saturday, April 21. Visit http://sustain.appstate.edu/events/1224 for more information.

This Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon, ASU’s chapter of Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway will be partnering with other ASU service organizations to clean stretches along the Parkway near Moses Cone Park for the first annual “Spring Sweep” in conjunction with Earth Day.

On Tuesday, April 24,  learn about “Sustainability Through the Arts.” Visit Plemmons Student Union between 3and 6:30 p.m. for several different arts events celebrating Earth and our relationship to the planet. Events include music, art, movement and sculpture.

Dr. Paul Bogard, a visiting environmental writer and creative writing professor at Wake Forest University, will read from his forthcoming book, “The Geography of Night,” on Thursday, April 26. His book addresses the value of the dark night sky from a cultural studies perspective. Bogard’s talk begins at 7:30 p.m. in Belk Library and Information Commons Room 421. 

Operation Medicine Cabinet will be held on Friday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Bring your outdated or unused prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, syringes or other medical supplies to Plemmons Student Union for safe disposal.
