17th Annual Appalachian GuitarFest and Competition Held at the Broyhill Music Center April 13 to 15

April 13, 2012. BOONE — The 17th Annual Appalachian GuitarFest and Competition will be held April 13 to April 15 in the Hayes School of Music’s Broyhill Music Center.

In conjunction with the competition, concerts featuring guitarists, vocalists and lute players also will be held. Tickets for the concerts are $20 for the general public and $10 for Appalachian students with an I.D. Tickets will be available at the door.

On Friday, April 13, mezzo-soprano Priscilla Porterfield, lute and theorbo player Gary Boye and guitarist Mat Palmer will perform beginning at 8:00 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall.

Porterfield will perform five English songs by John Dowland accompanied by Boye. Boye also will perform works by Flamminio Corradi and Bellerofonte Castaldi.

Palmer will perform “The Old Lime Tree” by Sergei Rudnev, “Collectici íntim “ by Vicente Asencio, “Aquarelle” by Sergio Assad and “The Carnival of Venice” by Francisco Tárrega.

Duo Spiritoso, comprised of guitarists Jeffrey McFadden and Andrew Zohn, and guitarist Ernesto Tamayo will perform Saturday, April 14, at 8:00 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall.

The duo will perform the overture from Rossini’s “Barber of Seville” arranged by Mauro Giuliani, “Four Spanish Dances” by Enrique Granados and “Variazioni Concertanti, Op. 130” by Giuliani.

Tamayo will perform Bach’s “Suite BWV 1006a,” four compositions by Leo Brouwer, Agustin Barrios Mangore’s “La Catedral” and his own compositions “Voices and Echoes” and Theme and Variations.”
