Feb. 26, 2018. “Game Night” sees its characters playing one of those elaborate role-playing games that’s spread out over several miles and involves a full company of actors. I’m weary of movies with this kind of premise because of the inevitable twist: at some point, we’re going to learn that everything that’s been happening is all part of the game. It’s the same thing with movies about con artists, magicians, or people who meddle in dreams. It’s not that I necessarily mind being played for a fool, I can enjoy some well-planned manipulation, but it just seems like a waste of time when the movie practically announces its intentions so early the way this one does. Feb. 23, 2018. This weekend, Feb. 23-25, The Pioneer Playmakers will present “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder. The performance is a not a musical and has three acts. The play focuses on love, marriage, eternity, daily life and death. Showtimes will take place at 7 p.m., on Friday and Saturday. Jan. 29, 2018. This presentation will give an overview of the fascinating story of Black Mountain College and an introduction to the work of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in Asheville. Black Mountain College existed for a mere 24 years, but in that short time, the small experimental college in the Appalachian Mountains just outside of Asheville produced a legacy that makes it central to American culture in multiple ways. While often thought of as an art school, in actuality the arts were just one important aspect of an overarching liberal arts education emphasizing the broader area of the humanities. On Saturday, September 30th, the Boone Shag Club and Appalachian State University Department of Theater and Dance will host the 2nd Annual Community-Wide Fall Shag Dance. The event will take place on Appalachian State University’s campus at the Reich College of Education Building.Tickets are available for $25, which includes dinner, the live band, and dance. April 5, 2016. Fire officials in Watauga are urging residents to use caution while open burning over the next several days. With low humidity and high wind gusts, this weather allows for a fire to quickly spread out of control.
