Anne Welch Featured Artist at Edgewood Cottage

The Letter

June 12, 2012. The Artists at Edgewood series is in full swing. Thursday, July 12 marks the first day of Anne Welch’s exhibit at Edgewood Cottage in Blowing Rock. The cottage is located at the corner of Main and Chestnut Streets right in front of the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum.

You can meet Ms. Welch and view her mixed media creations from Thursday, July 12-Tuesday, July 17 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., except Sunday when the hours are noon until 6 p.m.

Anne received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. During her 20 year career as a reporter and photographer for various daily Florida newspapers and as an editor for a Florida publishing company, she longed to pursue her long held dream of becoming an artist. She always kept her paint and brushes limbered up by attending art classes in the evenings, but just couldn’t let go of her first love…art.

At retirement Anne joined several art groups and eventually taught watercolor and drawing classes for 12 years in central Florida. After moving to Lenoir in 2009, she has taught at the Caldwell Arts Center in Lenoir and won several prizes locally for her art. She is a member of the High Country Watermedia Society, Watauga County Historical Society, Brush & Palette and is co-founder of Studio 12, a critique group in Lenoir.

As a teacher, she encourages her students to choose whatever subject and medium they want and to present their subject in a unique way; in short, to “think outside the canvas.” Ms. Welch believes that art sparks a spiritual connection between artist and viewer. In her own work she strives to communicate how she feels about what she sees rather than simply to create a literal record of it. She is not afraid to “color outside the lines!”

The Artists at Edgewood program is sponsored by the Blowing Rock Historical Society. Artists will be in residence everyday but Wednesdays through August 21st. All of the artwork is original and most of it is available for sale. Please come and experience art of the High Country in Elliott Daingerfield’s first home and studio in the area.

The mission of the Blowing Rock Historical Society is to protect and preserve the historic resources important to the heritage of Blowing Rock.
