I’m not sure which is more disappointing. The fact that some people out there still want to try the Santroum “man on dog” defense. Equating gay marriage on the same level of pedophilia or bestiality to show how “Wrong” or “Dangerous” it is. Or this new equally disingenuous pablum that says since we discriminate against A we can discriminate against X Y Z as well.
Where Rev Creech’s argument is flawed though is that when we break a law, oh excuse me “discriminate against a behavior.” (murder, polygamy, public nudity, etc) the arresting officer doesn’t have a spot on his Miranda card to ask if that’s my domestic partner beside me. There’s not a box in between age and race on the booking form to ask straight or bi either. Why? Because we are permitted equal protection under the law regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender. So why should sexual orientation be any different? Would pro amendment one people be happy with a addendum to all laws saying straight people get preferential treatment? On that grounds alone Amendment One violates those very rights so many fake “patriots” on the right are so bent on defending. “Life liberty and pursuit of happiness” doesn’t care about who you marry so why do you? How does someone in a loving relationship with someone they care about make your faith or your marriage any less valid? How can you consider it wrong when these committed couples wish to adopt and raise a child of their own in that love? Some secret gay agenda? What about the many “traditional” families out their raising kids in a culture that thinks it’s fine to bully yet another gay teen in Iowa to suicide this week, facebook hate page and all?
Some people need to learn that freedom doesn’t mean “Freedom for everyone who agrees with my point of view be it social, political, or religious.”
If we take this 2 + 2 = chair logic to its fullest though, this means we could make a law that discriminates against anything correct? How bout since we discriminate against speeders we pass a law to say that all grey cars on the highway must drive 5 miles an hour below the posted speed limits? And of course when people who own them say this is an unfair bias against them we can say. “Well driving a grey car is a social lifestyle choice, just change what you look like on the outside then you can be the same as the rest of us!” After all we have special clinics out there that can paint away the gray right?
As for all laws being founded on god’s law? I’d invite these people to read that part in the real first amendment about freedom from religion. That and the bible has a few words on it too, such as Romans 4: 14-15 “For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect. Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression”
This amendment does one thing and one thing only. To quote the prop 8 ruling in California. “It serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples,” The very same way way we did against blacks (because yes this IS a civil rights issue!) till 45 years ago when those “activist judges” on the supreme court ruled that banning interracial marriage was unconstitutional. How long will it take us to realize this is the next fight for equal rights? Take a stand now or shall we wait for 20 years down the line? (or one new measurement forever known as a Tillis)
It’s time to put a stop to this brand of intellectual dishonesty, moral hypocrisy, and rampant fear mongering about the gays wanting a 1040 same as you, oh i mean out to get your marriage. I for one plan to vote no to hate and discrimination on May 8, I urge all rational people looking to the future and not clinging to their last gasp of the past to do the same.
