“Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band” To Give Thrilling Show On Halloween Night At Legends

By Troy Brooks

“Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band” is coming to Legends Halloween night to deliver a rip-roaring performance that is sure to keep its audience shaking. End the Halloween season with this popular Asheville-based group, which returns to the High Country for its annual performance in Boone at 10 pm on Oct. 31. There will also be a competitive costume contest with prizes, so take the chance to dress up in your favorite costume while you’re at it!

“The Booty Band is a funkadelic five-piece featuring smokin’ horns, a keytar slinging babe-a-licious brunette and old school funk rhythms,” said marketing manager Matthieu Rodriguez. “The Asheville quintet released the album ‘Funk Life’ this summer, which featured classic funk riffs with a modern twist. Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band has shared stages with funk masters George Clinton’s P Funk, New Mastersounds, DJ Le Spam, Pimps of the Joytime and Galactic, and are regular favorites at festivals and venues across the country.”

The band formed in Boone in 2002 where a lot of the original members were former mountaineers. The zany name comes from the band’s matriarch, Booty Mama. Since then the group has put on shows all across the U.S. and their contagious style has been on demand through many circuits but Boone has always been a popular stop along the way.

“It’s not just because this is where we started,” said keyboardist and vocalist Mary Frances. “We love the community and its people. There’s a lot of love for music here and we always like to drop by and keep things shaking.”

The band will be bringing its signature funk style to the stage on Halloween along with some influences from their recent album, Funk Life, which was released this summer.

“We’ll be throwing some of our band’s classics and perhaps something special for the evening,” said Frances. “I can’t say much right now because every show we do is different, but one thing’s for certain.  We’re going to keep you moving.”

The Booty Band members are true road warriors, embracing the drive to get up on stage and give a show.

“Honestly it’s the music and crowd that pushes us,” said Frances.  “We write the things we love and love the things we write. It’s a great experience and the crowds is the most important thing that drives us. The energy they gives us and the energy we give them is circular. Every show and crowd is different and it’s such an amazing experience living your life connecting with people and music.”

When asked why music was so important to them, Frances had this to say.

“It’s what we were born to do,” said Frances. “It’s what we’re meant to do for a living. It’s how we speak our world. It’s the gift we were given to connect with people and each other. We got to live our dream.”
