Woolly Worm Festival Organizers Offer Inaugural Corporate Woolly Worm Race Open to Businesses

By Madison Fisler Lewis

Oct. 14, 2014. Perennial Woolly Worm Festival attendees are all too familiar with the exciting woolly worm races that are the center point imgresof the festival each year. Woolly worms are chosen and raced up a length of string to determine the worm that will forecast the weather each winter. But this year, for the first time ever, businesses will have a chance to weather the waces!

“Businesses can send a representative to race a worm for the trophy and to be the corporate sponsor next year,” said Executive Director of the Avery County Chamber of Commerce Susan Freeman.

Corporate teams can send as many people to cheer on their worm as they would like, but one person is allowed on stage to manage the worm. The corporate race will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. The winning worm will take home bragging rights and the honor of displaying the coveted Woolly Worm Corporate Race trophy in their business for the year.

Race lanes are limited for the corporate races, so registration is limited to the first 25 businesses. Only one worm per business, please.

Cost for corporate participation is $25 per business. Registration and sign up is available here.

Those interested in the corporate race should pre-register online or contact the Chamber of Commerce in advance, Freeman said.
