Wilkes Prison Inmate Escapes Work Assignment in Ashe County Monday, Still Looking for Him Tuesday

Dec. 16, 2014. The Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are searching for an inmate from Wilkes Correctional Center, a minimum security prison in Wilkes County, who has walked away from an outside work assignment in Ashe County.

At approximately 2:15 p.m. on Monday, correctional staff were notified that Christopher Church was missing from his assignment at the Department of Transportation yard.

Church, 29, is serving an active sentence for habitual impaired driving. He was due for release in May 2015. He is from Concord and has family connections in Virginia and may attempt to travel there.
