Wilkes Man Charged With Murdering Relative, Robbing Bank Captured in Watauga County on U.S. 421 Monday

Sept. 24, 2013. A Wilkes County man charged with murdering a relative and robbing a bank was arrested along U.S. 421, five miles east of Boone, at about noon on Monday.

Rainer Johannes Hoedl, 51, was stopped in Watauga County as he drove a white Chevy pickup because it matched the description of the vehicle that the bank robbery suspect was believed to have been driving..

Wilkes County Sheriff Chris Shew told the Wilkes Journal-Patriot that he was charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of George Moses Jr., 48, of Gold Mine Ridge Road near the Windy Gap Road exit off of U.S. 421. The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office responded to the report of a shooting at 10:02 a.m. on Monday, and less than 30 minutes later, according to law enforcement, an armed Hoedl entered the Wells Fargo Bank on U.S. 421 displayed a gun, demanded money and then left the bank with the cash. 

Troopers with the State Highway Patrol and deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office apprehended the suspect.
