Watauga High School’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps recently found success at the 20th annual Daniel Boone High School MCJROTC Invitation Drill Meet in Gray, Tenn.
The all-service competition, in which teams compete and are evaluated on precision movements, conformance to uniform and drill standards and teamwork, features some of the best JROTC drill teams in the Southeast.
The WHS MCJROTC has competed in the small team category for the last three years, and for the second year in a row took a prize back home to Watauga County Schools, placing second overall.
Senior Marine Instructor Lt. Col. Jerry Harper expressed pride in the team.
“We have a very young competitive drill team this year, and they have worked very hard to achieve this level of skill.”
Harper said the team also won first place in the color guard competition, second place in the unarmed squad, and third place armed squad contests.
The team will conclude the competitive season in April at the Appalachian Regional Championship at Science Hill High School in Johnson City, Tenn.
The JROTC is a successful and growing program at WHS. Home to more than 60 cadets, the program has a dedicated classroom with an indoor air rifle marksmanship range as well as training grounds on the school’s campus.
