Watauga County Habitat for Humanity is currently looking for volunteers who are able to devote at least one Wednesday in order to help create good, affordable housing for those who find themselves in need in the community.
Watauga Habitat presently is building a home in their eco-friendly GreenWood neighborhood and harbor plans to begin construction on another home in September.
Since their founding in 1987, thousands of individual volunteers have been essential to Watauga County’s Habitat’s impact on the local community.
They are welcoming of all volunteers to come out and participate, regardless of the amount of experience they have in construction, or lack of; they also encourage volunteers to become involved with the Watauga Habitat ReStore as well as Habitat’s other means of helping out in the community.
Participants are able to choose to become a one-time, weekly or monthly Wednesday Warrior by volunteering from 9am to 4pm, either all day or for half a day.
The goal of the Watauga County Habitat for Humanity is to provide decent, affordable housing for and in partnership with Watauga County residents who are from low to moderate-income homes.
Habitat for Humanity is able to do this by building modest homes with only volunteer labor as well as land and supplies which are donated or purchased at very low costs.
Habitat for Humanity also offers a zero-interest mortgage to homeowners with homes also sold with zero profit, as they are a non-profit organization.
Habitat for Humanity initially began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia, kick-started by the ideology that everyone ought to have a decent place to live. The housing organization has grown since then and is now one of the leading global nonprofits, becoming involved in over 1,300 communities throughout the United States as well as in more than 70 different countries.
Families and individuals who find themselves in need of support partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place that they can call home in order to provide them with a stable environment in which they are able to grow from.
Habitat homeowners then help build their own homes alongside unpaid volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
Through financial support, volunteering, or adding a voice to support affordable housing, their hope is to help families achieve strength, stability and self-reliance in order to form better lives for themselves.
Habitat for Humanity stands by their motto, “Through shelter, we empower.”
