What’s New at the Farmers’ Market? Shopping at Horn in the West on Sat, July 16

The market operates from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday this summer at 591 Horn in the West in Boone.

For more information, check out wataugacountyfarmersmarket.org.

In 1943, Rogers and Hammerstein wrote their first musical, “Oklahoma”, which was a box-office Broadway production smash hit and an Academy Award winning film in 1955.  The lead song, “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ ” describes perfectly what it feels like on Saturday mornings at the Market and captures the essence of why our farmers take so much pride in their produce and products.

Oh, what a beautiful mornin’,
Oh, what a beautiful day.
I got a beautiful feelin’
Ev’erything’s goin’ my way.
There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow,
There’s a bright golden haze on the meadow,
The corn is as high as an elephants eye,
An’ it looks like it’s climbing clear up in the sky.

All the cattle are standin’ like statues,
All the cattle are standin’ like statues,
They don’t turn their heads as they see me ride by,
But a little brown mav’rick is winkin’ her eye.

All the sounds of the earth are like music
All the sounds of the earth are like music
The breeze is so busy it don’t miss a tree
And an old weepin’ willer is laughin’ at me

We’d love to have you join us at the Market on Saturday, capture the feeling, and whistle a tune.

Answer to last week’s Market Quiz:  “TheEggplant that ate Chicago!

Market Quiz Question for Week 11 (A triple tuffy)
In the 1986 rock musical, quasi-cult film, “Little Shop of Horrors”, the voice for the extraterrestrial carnivorous man-eating plant (hey, I’ve got to tie the question to the Market) was a famous lead singer for a group that helped define Motown’s sound in the ‘60s. The plant’s name was Audrey II.

  1. Who was the voice for Audrey II?
  2. What was the name of this Motown group?
  3. What was their first number one song (1965)?

The third person to get all correct answer will win a $10.00 gift certificate at the Market and have bragging rights for Week 11 of the Market.  (wataugacountyfarmersmarket@gmail.com)

Saturday will be another great day at the Market!!!  In addition to all the wonderful produce and products(please see below), we’ve got lots of exciting activities. Back by popular demand on center stage is one of our local favorites, the Spice Creek Ramblers.  On our side stage, for his inaugural appearance at performing Progressive Folk Rock is very talented Frederick Ingram.  Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (BRWIA) will be providing information and answer questions about exciting upcoming farm tours.  The non-profit, High Country Recreation, will be at the Market to provide a comprehensive source of recreation information, advocate for improved recreation opportunities, and create a network of voices who are champions for a more healthy and sustainable community.   There will be no “Kid’s Corner” this week.

Hope to see you on Saturday at the Market!  Be there at our Town Square!unnamed
