What’s New at the Farmers’ Market: Shopping at Horn in the West on Sat, Aug. 20

The market operates from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday this summer at 591 Horn in the West in Boone.

Saturday will be another great day at the Market!!!  In addition to all the wonderful produce and products(please see below), we’ve got lots of exciting activities. Back by popular demand, on center stage, the Market is very proud to present the ever popular Mountain Laurels.  On our side stage making her Market debut for the first time ever is the talented and entertaining Susan David.  The Market is pleased to welcome back Chef Robert Back, Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute Watauga, who will dazzle us with another fabulous cooking demonstration.  Watauga Medics will be back again for instructions in CPR and basic first aid. There will be no Kids Corner this week.

Produce and Products at the Market – Aug 20, 2016
Moretz Mountain Orchard & Farm – Berries- blue, raspberries and if weather is good black berries. Blue Samson Plums, Apples-  Summer Rambo (developed in the 1500’s this one has stood the test of time), Maidens Blush, Spice, Zesty See, MacIntosh, Silken, Sweet Rusty Coat, Chehalis and Ole Timey Spice. Dried apples.Mountain Memories Farm – Along with all cuts of meat from both LAMB AND PORK, we will have ground beef and a HUGE VARIETY of SAUSAGES in LINK and bulk.  Exciting new sausage this week.  BOEREWORS (South African) is a blend of 3 meats, awesome flavor, and has NO SUGAR! Faith Mountain Farm – Freshly harvested sourwood honey now available!  Variety of breakfast muffins, cinnamon rolls, scones, granola, whole grain breads, and chewy balls along with gluten free options for scones and muffins and usually a cake (strawberry, chocolate, or coconut).  Local varieties of spring  and summer honey from our apiaries.  Zinnias, Sunflowers.  Garlic.

Owens Farm – Tomatoes including red, pink, yellow, purple, stripe, chocolate stripe, roma, cherry & artisan.  Cucumbers, eggplant, kenebec, pontiac red & yukon gold potatoes.  Bell pepper, banana, cayenne & jalapeno pepper & okra.

Against the Graincertified organic and Biodynamic summer squash, carrots, beets, tomatoes, strawberries, garlic, peppers, onions, dill, potatoes, and cornmeal.  We also have Animal Welfare Approved, gmo-free, pasture-raised pork and chicken.

Wishful Thinking Studio – will have some of Caron Baker Wike’s new new beasty bowls:  piggy party, round up, and fox trot along with a couple of large rectangle platter and a bunch of smaller paulownia leaves.   Come tell us what you think.

Baskets and Bricks – [Bare root] Day Lilies, Shasta Daisies, and blue Stokes Asters. Cut flower bouquets, Sunflower micro greens, fresh basil, stringless green beans, baskets, garden bricks.

Colibri – Specializing in fine hand-knotted necklaces made from well-loved to very unusual semi-precious beads. They are closed with wonderful magnetic clasps and are sold as a set with matching earrings. We are also the only ones I know who work with variscite (Look it up.). We also sell beautiful sterling wrapped pendants (including a cord so you can wear them away). We include an earring rack and a lovely bracelet section.

Blue Ridge Apiaries – new crop of Watauga County-harvested Wildflower honey as well as mountain varietals: Basswood, Goldenrod, and Sourwood Honeys.

Octopus Gardens – cilantro, dill, basil, head lettuce, broccoli, kohlrabi, tri colored beets, purple and dinosaur kale, edible flowers, flower bouquets, our famous mini cabbages, and fresh onions.

Goldenrod Gardens – gorgeous flowers and bouquets on demand.  Any bouquet can also be tied with a hand dyed silk ribbon of your choice.  Mint, rainbow salad, arugula, and pea tendrils are perfect for meals.

Pottery by Remo – New wood-fired art pieces will be available this Saturday that were last fired in his Amagama wood kiln.

Tumbling Shoals Farm – certified organic  tomatoes (heirlooms Azoychka, Rose, Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Cherokee Chocolate, Copia, and German Johnson, and beefsteaks), the famous sungold cherry tomatoes, sweet Italian peppers and red, orange and yellow bell peppers, green and purple bell peppers, the last of the red, white and blue potatoes, basil, jalapeno, pasilla, and Serrano chiles, shishito peppers, New Mexican (a.k.a. “Hatch” or “anaheim”) peppers, poblano peppers, eggplant, okra, fresh cut mint, rosemary, sage, thyme and parsley.

Brooks Farm Beef – high quality grass fed beef that we have brought the past nine years to the market! Ranging from steaks, roasts, beef tips, ground beef and many other cuts. This beef is for the consumer who wants red meat that is healthy and tastes great.

Our delicious products are baked fresh just before market day using fresh farm eggs and natural organic oils. Our baked goods are hand-made using certified high-quality, gluten-free flours and tasty nuts, dried and fresh fruits. Mountain Flower bakery offers a variety of decorated specialty cupcakes in many designs. We always bring our popular Paleo fruit and nut cake, cookies, brownies, biscotti and big fruity breakfast muffins to market. We will also have our special vegan, nut-free and sugar-free items on hand for our market friends!
