WHAT’S GOING ON With Giant Pile of Dirt on NC 105?

Much of this soil excavated on site will be used to backfill in the retaining wall of this construction project, which is a 25,000-square-foot medical building operated by Fresenius Medical Care.

If you ever drive by Ingles Markets along N.C. 105, you’ve certainly noticed a giant pile of dirt, towering above the highway.

Crews operation construction equipment have been moving massive amounts of dirt for the past few months, and Paul Jones, a superintendent with general contractor David E. Looper & Company, said a couple weeks ago that more than 26,000 yards of soil is expected to be exported.

As for the giant pile of dirt visible from the road, Jones said this dirt, which is a higher quality soil for construction that is excavated on site, is being stored there until it is time to backfill the retaining wall.

Usually, contractors and developers have to deal with winter conditions, but there hasn’t been any snow to contend with yet this season.

“It’s been fairly good besides the rain,” Jones said, adding that prior winters have certainly been more difficult.

Excavation of the site began in August, and plans submitted to the Boone Planning and Inspections office call for a nearly 25,000-square-foot medical building operated by Fresenius Medical Care.

The total land area is roughly 3.6 acres and about 3 of those acres are to be disturbed. The project is expected to cost about $3.2 million, according to information submitted to Boone Planning and Inspections.
