A portion of West King Street sidewalk is currently closed with a slight detour as about 200 feet of sidewalk near the Appalachian Theatre is being replaced with brick pavers.

Brick pavers have already been installed in front of the Appalachian Theatre as crews work towards the intersection of Appalachian and King streets.

The Boone Public Works Department begin construction on the sidewalk “enhancement” after the Fourth of July holidays. Along with the construction of brick pavers, the project consists of a bulb-out and a pedestrian signal at Appalachian and King streets.

Currently, a crew is working in front of the Dancing Moon, Lililu on King and Hands Gallery stores on King Street. The stores are still accessible and open.

The paver project extends from in front of the Appalachian Theatre, where the pavers have already been installed, to the intersection of Appalachian and King streets.

In a release issued before the project began, the town noted that construction is expected to last through August.

“The Town of Boone appreciates your cooperation during this time and will work to maintain access to the businesses this construction will effect,” the release said.

Pavers first showed up in downtown Boone whenever the Doc Watson statue was installed several years ago. The Mast General Store funded the installation of pavers in front of its store on King Street and near the statue.

Since then the town and Downtown Boone Development Association have funded the installation of brick pavers throughout other parts of downtown Boone.
