Wild & Scenic Film Festival, Held in Conjunction with RiverFest, Tackles the Issue of Climate Change

by Erika Giovanetti

June 26, 2013. The 2013 Wild & Scenic Film Festival held this Saturday, June 29, adapts the theme “A Climate of Change.” Enjoy short films, live music, food and prizes under the stars at Valle Crucis Community Park at 8 p.m.

The festival presents ten eye-opening films that focus on climate change and the preservation of our planet. This year’s line-up will take you around the planet, focusing on the animals losing their remote and beautiful homes as well as the people working to protect and preserve these areas for future generations.

Festivalgoers can expect to see award-winning films about nature, community activism, adventure, conservation, water, energy and climate change, wildlife, environmental justice, agriculture, Native American and indigenous cultures.

Along with the films being shown, there will also be a raffle to win outdoor gear, a local food truck and BYOB picnic, a “Star Party” after the festival to discover the dark sky of Valle Crucis, and live music performed by Boone’s own Worthless Son in Laws.

The Western North Carolina Alliance (WNCA) is an organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of the mountains of western North Carolina. For over 30 years, WCNA has been initiating grassroots movements ensuring the health, quality and cleanliness of our forests, water and air. The mission of the WNCA is to empower citizens to be advocates for livable communities and the natural environment of western North Carolina.

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival serves as a membership drive for the WNCA. General admission tickets are $10, and the WNCA offers a special deal for a $25 year membership and ticket package (a $45 value). This deal is carried out during the festival only. Students and children are admitted at a discount rate of $6, and are eligible for the membership and ticket package for $12 (a $36 value).

Don’t miss one of the nation’s premier environmental film festivals, which we are fortunate enough to host in our own High Country. For tickets and more information about the festival and the WNCA, click here. For more information about RiverFest, click here
