Nov. 15, 2013.  The High Country has so many exciting events to offer its community and visitors, especially as the blustery winter season is on its way. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

Greenway Baptist Church Holiday Expo: The Greenway Baptist Church will host the inaugural Christmas Expo on Nov. 15, from 3-8 p.m. and Nov. 16 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.. Admission to the event is $3 for adults or an equal amount on nonperishable food items. More than 26 vendors will be participating from Avon, Arbonne, Paparazzi Jewelry, 31, Times Past Toys, Mountain Man Wood Designs, quilting items, Premier Designs, crocheted rope scarves, vintage decor and more! Savion Glover’s STePz: With unmatched energy and the ability to take tap dancing to a whole new level, Savion Glover has become America’s tap master. America Recycles Day: Although “America Recycles Day,” which is Friday, Nov. 15, is the official day to celebrate recycling and all of its benefits to the environment and economy, Marsha Story, the Town of Boone’s recycling coordinator, would like you to look at this, not as a one-day event, but as an ongoing awareness that is practiced everyday. Bluegrass at Todd General Store: Join us every Friday from late May until Thanksgiving and listen to a variety of live Bluegrass Acts. Dinner will be served at 6pm and music starts at 7pm. Come early to be sure you get a seat.

Songs of Water at the Harvest House: Songs of Water is coming to Boone for a weekend of incredible music at Harvest House in Boone. On Friday, Nov. 15 they will be featured for the Ascend worship series’ final event of the year. Event starts at 7 p.m.

Grand Opening of Freedom Farm Ministries Thrift Store: The grand opening will take place Friday, Nov. 15 from 4-6 p.m. with ribbon cutting at 4:30 p.m. at 1583 N.C. 105 Bypass in Boone. Please RSVP to Wysteria at Wysteria.white@boonechamber.com.

Saturday, Nov. 16

Inaugural Scale Olympiad: On Nov. 16, 15 local piano students will compete in the first annual Scale Olympiad held at the Hayes School of Music. The Olympiad is a grueling competition featuring six technical events at five different difficulty levels for students to compete in to win mastery awards. The Gobbler Annual 5K: Appalachian and the Community Together (ACT) of Appalachian State University hosts the third annual 5k Gobbler Run on Nov. 16, where the motto is, “Run the gobbler, eat the cobbler.” And sure enough, when the race is through, everyone gets a hefty slice of cobbler while they await the race results and prize ceremony.  All proceeds go to the Leigh Lane Edwards Scholarship Fund and to nonprofit restaurant Farm Cafe on King Street.

Watauga County Farmers’ Market: Every Saturday morning from May to November you will find quality locally farmed meats, fresh produce, artisan cheeses, dried and fresh cut flowers, hardy local plants, delicious edibles, and a wide variety of quality crafts. The Watauga County Farmers’ Market is located in the Horn in the West parking lot beside the Daniel Boone Native Gardens in Boone.

Children’s Playhouse Birthday Bash: Enjoy cake and more at the Birthday Bash! The Playhouse Birthday Bash is presented by the Orthodontists and Pediatric Dentists Drs. Mayhew, Scheffler, Hardaway, & Conn and is also sponsored by Harmony Center for Women’s Health and Vitality, Kiwanis Club of Boone, and the Mast General Store.

 ASU v. Wofford: Appalachian State University with face Wofford in a football contest on Saturday. This is an away game. 

Country Breakfast at the Post: It’s the last one for 2013. Start your Saturday with The Watauga American Legion Post #130 “Country Breakfast at the Post” on Saturday morning, Nov. 16 from 7-10 a.m. The cost is $8 per person for an all-you-can-eat home-cooked breakfast. The menu includes country ham, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, homemade biscuits and gravy, hash browns, grits, cooked apples and fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee, regular and buckwheat pancakes available upon request. This is completely open to the public. Thank you for supporting our local veterans and veteran programs. Located at 135 Bear Trail/Junaluska Town Park in Boone. 

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Begins: Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is Saturday, Nov. 16 through Sunday, Nov. 24, at Appalachian State University with a series of events. The public is invited to participate. Hunger and Homelessness awareness week brings attention to issues of national poverty, hunger and homelessness.

Sunday, Nov. 17

Ashe County Holiday Farmers’ Market: Lots of goodies for the holidays at the Ashe County Holiday Markets. The holiday market is located in West Jefferson. 

Otto Wood Hike at Elk Knob State Park: Join a ranger Sunday, November 17 at 2 p.m. as he presents Otto Wood, celebrated Appalachian folk hero and convicted felon. Participants will hike as they learn how the criminal genius broke the law, escaped from prison and captured the imagination of the American public. Hike is weather dependent. Hiking attire to include boots is recommended. Meet at the summit trailhead.

Concerto-Aria Finals: Students from the Hayes School of Music will perform in the school’s concerto-aria competition finals Sunday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center at Appalachian State University. Admission is free. Violinist Alexander Travers will perform the first movement of “Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, Op. 22” by Henryk Wieniawski.
