Dec. 21, 2012. This weekend has a variety of things to do for anybody in the High Country. Whether you are looking for something to relieve the week’s stress or a wild night on the town, the High country has something to offer that will trigger that interest. There are so many things to look forward to as the weekend quickly approaches.

Holiday Events All Weekend at Beech Mountain Resort

Santa will be at Beech Mountain Resort on Friday, Dec. 21 through Sunday, Dec. 23. From 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily, Santa will be in the View Haus Cafeteria making sure to hear everyone’s holiday wishes. On Dec. 22, the View Haus will host a Holiday Sweater Party! From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., the View Haus will provide live music from Wise Old River. Holiday Beverages will be on special! Prizes will be awarded for the best holiday sweater outfit.

ASU Men’s Basketball vs. Presbyterian College

The Appalachian State Mountaineers men’s basketball team will be on the hardwood Saturday afternoon when they square off against Presbyterian College at the Holmes Convocation Center. This will be the Mountaineers’ first home game since Nov. 28 following a four-game road trip.

App Ski Mountain Opening Slopes

With a very positive snowmaking forecast projected through early next week, Appalachian plans to take full advantage of cold temperatures and open as much terrain as possible for skiing & snowboarding on Saturday, Dec. 22.

Breakfast With Mrs. Claus

58While Santa and the elves are busy making Christmas toys for all the little girls and boys, Mrs. Claus comes to Beech Mountain to have breakfast and spread Christmas cheer to all of the children in the community. Come join us at Buckeye Recreation Center as Mrs. Claus comes to read Christmas stories, visit, and take photos with the children. A light breakfast will be served free of charge, but donations are greatly appreciated!

Sugar Mountain Rail Jam

On Saturday, Dec. 22 beginning at 10 a.m., come out and watch or throw down with some of the area’s most daring and creative riders and skiers as they deliver thrilling entertainment during the Rail Jam. Over $4,500 in cash, prizes and giveaways, courtesy of Alpine Ski Center, RIDE Snowboards, Salomon, Burton, Scott, Oakley, 686, One Ball Jay, The North Face, Dalbello and Dakine. Be sure to preregister at any Alpine Ski Center throughout the Southeast.

Santa’s Last Stop at Sweet Frog

Come see Santa right before he leaves for the North Pole. He has chosen to stop into Sweet Frog in Boone, North Carolina to take pictures with as many of his favorite people as possible. We will have crafts and the prize wheel running. Lots of tasty yogurt and toppings.

Shop-Local-Saturdays‘Shop Local Saturdays’ – Boone Area Chamber’s Holiday-Shopping Campaign Begins

As holiday shopping winds to a close “Shop Local Saturday” will conclude this Saturday, Dec. 22. Boone Area Chamber President Dan Meyer said the idea for the annual holiday-shopping campaign sprang from American Express’ “Small Business Saturday,” which takes place in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Rome Pre-Jib at App Ski Mountain

ATP & Recess will host the Rome Pre-Jib snowboard competition on Sunday, Dec. 23. This is one of 10 Pre-Jib events hosted in the U.S. and Canada, with huge prizes up for grabs and a free entry with valid lift ticket.

Ornament Making and Holiday Bonfire

Ornament Making

Decorate an ornament for a friend, sibling, or special family member. Your creativity is the limit! There is no better way to get into the holiday spirit than to decorate a personalized Christmas tree ornament!

Festival of Lights

FIX_0204Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock is the place to go to see Christmas Lights in the High Country. A drive through the resort reveals over 50,000 lights on display and the lights will stay on until Jan. 27, 2013.

Furry Friends of all Sizes

Pet Adoption Fair

Modern Subaru of Boone is hosting Pet Adoption Fairs on Dec. 21 & Dec. 28 in partnership with the Watauga Humane Society. Modern Subaru is paying the adoption fees. That is correct, if you come out to the fair and find the perfect cat or dog – Modern Subaru will pay for the adoption fees. There is one catch, you must adopt the day of the fair in order for Modern Subaru to pay your fees.
