And a Child Shall Lead

Starting Friday, Blowing Rock’s own professional theatre company opens a heartrending performance of Michael Slade’s “And a Child Shall Lead” — a play set in a concentration camp established by the SS during World War II.

The performance opens on Friday evening at Ensemble Stage and will be offered again on Saturday and Sunday. A cast of children will portray this true story of steadfast hope and innocence that existed in the camp in the face of unspeakable horror.

An Appalachian Summer Festival

Appalachian State University’s annual multidisciplinary summer arts festival offers an awesome performance of Without Words by In/Visible Theatre and the annual Rosen Sculpture Walk. Without Words is the story of Idelfonso, a languageless deaf man and Susan, the sign language interpreter determined to help him learn. Experts say someone cannot learn a first language as an adult; Susan and Idelfonso proved the experts wrong.

Join the Turchin Center’s curatorial staff on Saturday morning for an outdoor tour of the featured work from the 29th Rosen Sculpture Invitational, which promises a fascinating perspective on the world of contemporary sculpture.
