It’s warming up outside, so make plans to get out and enjoy it. This weekend’s roundup of events and activities around the High Country includes nature photography, a chance to explore fire trucks, fundraisers, lots of live music and even zombies!  

Nature Photography Weekend

Learn from the folks behind the camera starting today Grandfather Mountain’s Nature Photography Weekend. Hear presentations from top nature photographers and photography scenery and animals during the day. The photos you capture from excursions today and tomorrow will be entered into an informal competition. Find out Sunday who had the best shot!

This friendly competition brings you expert advice in the evenings and gives you plenty of time during the day to capture the beauty of Grandfather Mountain. Visit Grandfather Mountain online for more information.

EmergencyFest at ASUDSC_03961

The 12th annual Emergency Fest will take place on Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Peacock Parking Lot (formerly Raley Lot) and will be a fun learning experience for children of all ages. The event is free and open to the public.

Organized and sponsored by the Watauga County Firefighters Association, personnel from all of the county’s emergency-service organizations will be attending. Children will be given an exciting opportunity to meet with and learn from emergency personnel, as well as safely explore fire trucks, police cars and ambulances.

Zombie Run in North Wilkesboro

Feeling a little adventurous? Head down to North Wilkesboro tomorrow and join the Zombie Run! Tickets for the 2k Zombie run are $10 per person, no age limit, with parent or guardian, or $5 with a donation of 2 or more canned goods for The Wilkes Ministry of Hope. Registration is available at Kinetic Fitness, online, and at the registration booth on the day of event, beginning at 4 p.m. Check it out online.

Worthless Son in Laws at Music on the Lawn Tonight

Don’t miss a performance by Drive South at The Best Cellar in Blowing Rock tonight during the weekly Music on the Lawn concert series. Get there early and bring a lawn chair to get a good spot. Enjoy the cash bar and lawn menu all night. Concert 5:30-8:30 p.m. No pets due to property regulations. No coolers or outside food and beverage will be allowed.

Grits & Soul at Music in the Valley Tonight

Check out an Americana/bluegrass performance by Tellico at this week’s Music in the Valle concert series in the beautiful Valle Crucis Community Park. Admission is free but $5 per person donations to the park are recommended. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic. Concert starts at 6:30 p.m.

Music at Linville Falls Winery

Ready to enjoy a nice glass of wine and some live music? Check out Linville Falls Winery this weekend. American master musician Wayne Taylor will perform on Saturday, and local favorites the Harris Brothers will rock the house on Sunday. Visit the winery online for more information.

Laurel Springs Baptist Church Praise Sing for Relay for Life on May 31

Laurel Springs Baptist Church will host its annual Relay For Life Praise Sing on Sunday, May 31 at 6 p.m. at the church.  Different individuals and groups from the church and community will be singing your favorite Christian music. Luminaria in honor and memory of loved ones will be for sale and will be displayed during the service and at Relay for Life on June 19. A love offering will be taken and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Watauga County. Everyone is invited to attend.
