Weekend Roundup: Many Things To Do This Weekend; Check ‘em Out and Make Plans: Jan. 25 to 27

Jan. 25, 2013. This weekend has a variety of things to do for anybody in the High Country. Whether you are looking for something to relieve the week’s stress or a wild night on the town, the High Country has something to offer that will trigger that interest. There are so many things to look forward to as the weekend quickly approaches.

004315th Annual Blowing Rock WinterFest

There are a lot — and we mean a lot — of things going on in Blowing Rock this whole weekend as part of the 15th annual Blowing Rock WinterFest. Whether it’s leaping into the icy waters of Chetola Lake, observing some ice carving by the U.S. Army Special Forces Ice Carving Team or warming up with some great chili at the Chilly Chili Cookoff, there is something for everyone at WinterFest.

Go Big or Go Home! at App Ski Mountain, Friday

Join ASM on Friday, Jan. 25 for a special event put on by Dragon Optics – Go Big or Go Home!

This event will be a unique rail jam that is free to enter and offers tons of great prizes, including $100 cash for both Standout Ski and Standout Snowboard, as well as Dragon goggles that will be awarded on the spot to shredders that are killing it. You definitely don’t want to miss it!

Momentum Dance Concert at ASU, Friday

There will be a Momentum dance concert in the Appalachian State Varsity Gym, room 208, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Momentum Showcase is a dance concert choreographed, performed, and adjudicated by students. Proceeds from the concert will go to fund master classes with guest artists for students. It will also assist students in expanding their dance experience. The showcase is produced by the student dance club Momentum. Tickets are available at the door prior to the performance and start at $6 for students.

Square Dance at Legends, Friday

Check out the Square Dance with Laurel Creek Stringband & Connie Carringer on Friday. Welcome in the new semester with the first dance of 2013! The Appalachian Heritage Council welcomes back the always-lovely Connie Carringer to the area with great music provided by the Laurel Creek Stringband. Grab a friend and your dancing shoes; you won’t want to miss this. The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $3 students/ $5 public.

Jeff Sipe Group at Murphy’s, Friday and Saturday

Jeff Sipe, described as “one of the most prolific and creative drummers around” by Abstract Logix’s Souvik Dutta, will be playing at Murphy’s on King Street on both Friday and Saturday nights starting at 10 p.m. The show is restricted to those over 21 years of age and the cover charge is $5.

Snowshoe Tour at Beech Mountain, Saturday

Ready to step right into a true winter wonderland? Join Beech Mountain for free snowshoe tours throughout the winter in Beech Mountain’s beautiful alpine wilderness. The journeys are set in the beautiful Western NC wilderness on Beech Mountain’s publicly maintained trail system. The groups frolic around the woods, over scenic ridges, around Beech’s water features and enjoy nice rests along the way to absorb Mother Nature’s beauty. Always be sure to bring along water and a snack. You will definitely need it on these adventures! Space is limited so call 828-387-3003 to register.

ASU Basketball vs. Davidson, Saturday

Appalachian Stat University men’s basketball concludes a short, two-game homestand when it plays host to Southern Conference leader Davidson at 2 p.m. on Saturday. 

Family Story Time at the Watauga County Public Library, Saturday

Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, the Watauga County Public Library will host a family story time event. The event is free to the public but could be subject to cancellation depending on weather conditions.

wine_tastingWine Tasting at Peabody’s, Saturday

Come over to Peabody’s on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. and enjoy tasting some medium to high-end wines. Different importers and wineries are featured each week. The cover charge for the tasting is $5. 

Caribbean Cowboys at Canyons, Saturday

Check out the Caribbean Cowboys cover band at Canyons on Saturday night. There will be an $8 cover and music starts at 9:30 p.m. Click here for more info about the Caribbean Cowboys.

Burlesque Dance Party at Boone Saloon, Saturday

Boone Saloon will be hosting a burlesque dance party on Saturday night beginning at 10 p.m. There will be a cover charge of $5 for the party.

Shred for the Cup Big Air at App Ski Mountain, Sunday

SFTC will highlight the “triple crown” of park events once again, with Rail Jam, Big Air, and Slopestyle competitions throughout the entire winter. In order to assure maximum snow depths and best quality setups, all events will occur during January & February. All events will also be scheduled for the Day Session, as in the past some of our Night SFTC events have been affected by inclement weather. ATP will be partnering each SFTC event with a major title sponsor to provide prizes, product, and support for everyone involved.

Sunday Jazz Brunch at Canyons, Sunday

Enjoy a Sunday brunch at Canyon’s in Blowing Rock. Todd Wright, the ambassador of jazz for Western North Carolina, and friends will provide the music.

Benefit Concert for the Animals, Sunday

Celebrate an evening of music performed by students and faculty to benefit the Watauga Humane Society at the ASU Hayes School of Music. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. 

A donation of $5 is suggested.
