The High Country has so many exciting events to offer its community and visitors. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

Live Music at Twigs: Twig’s Restaurant in Blowing Rock hosts live music every Friday and Saturday night, from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m. featuring great local and regional artists with no cover charge.

Art Expo 2015: The Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University presents Art Expo 2015, an annual juried student exhibition and arts competition for Appalachian students. The exhibition will be on view from Feb. 24 through March 28 at the Smith Gallery located in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibition is organized by the Smith Gallery and juried by Mary Anne Redding, the Curator at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in Boone. For more information about this event click here.

Alumni Ski Weekend: Appalachian Alumni Weekend at Beech Mountain Resort, coordinated by the High Country Appalachian Alumni Chapter, features discounts for alumni and their families on lift tickets, ski and snowboard rental, local hotel accommodations and more March 7-8! After you’ve enjoyed the excellent skiing and a charming Alpine Village filled with shops and restaurants, you’ll have the opportunity to socialize and network with your fellow Appalachian Alumni at our Saturday evening social at the newly remodeled Beech Mountain Brewing Company. Friday, March 6

Friday Night Jazz: Timberlake’s Restaurant at Chetola Resort will host Friday Night Jazz starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 6. The Maureen Renihan Jazz Trio will perform for restaurant patrons.

Freakin’ Firkin Friday: On Friday, March 6, Lost Province Brewing Company will host Freakin’ Firkin Friday at Five with the release of a special 12-gallon cask of beer at 5 p.m. along with live music.

Apres Ski Series: On Friday, March 6, Beech Mountain Resort will begin the first ever Apres Ski Music Series. On Friday evening from 5-7 p.m., Andy Ferrell will perform in the Beech Mountain Brewing Company. At 7 p.m., Big Daddy Love will take over the stage.

Saturday, March 7

BANFF A4 Award Nominations Due: In conjunction with the popular Banff Mountain Film Festival, and to help celebrate the 19th annual screening of the World Tour, ASU Outdoor Programs is announcing the fourth annual Appalachian Adventure Achievement Award or A4. For more information click here.

Acoustic Syndicate at Beech Mountain Resort: On Saturday, March 7, North Carolina’s own Acoustic Syndicate will take the stage at the Beech Tree Bar and Grille at Beech Mountain Resort at 7 p.m.

Live Music at Linville Falls Winery: On Saturday, March 7, Linville Falls Winery will host Jim Fleri, jazz keyboard and vocals, as the next installment of the winter live music. Linville Falls Winery is located at 9557 Linville Falls Highway in Newland.

Make Your Own Olaf: Do you want to build a snowman? With all of this snow coming down lately, many kids in the area might be wondering if everyone’s favorite snow queen, Frozen’s Elsa, might be playing a trick on the High Country. Beech Mountain is taking advantage of the winter wonderland with the Frozen Family Fun event held March 7. For more information, click here.

Jeff Little Concert: The Ashe County Arts Council will sponsor Jeff Little In Concert at the Ashe Civic Center on Saturday, March 7.

Animal Mounts at Grandfather Mountain State Park: Join Ranger Sicard to learn about some of the many animals that live within Grandfather Mountain State Park. Participants will get to see mounted examples of the animals up close as we talk about their unique adaptations (features).

2015 Gala of Hope: Please join us at the Martha Washington Inn Saturday, March 7 at 6 p.m. for our Cancer Outreach Foundation 2015 Gala of Hope. Tickets are $50 per person and reservations are requested. The event is casual dress with Heavy Hors d’ oeuvres and a cash bar will be available. Join us for Silent and Live Auctions. All proceeds will go to assist cancer patients and their families in southwest Virginia and northeast Tennessee. Thank you for your support!

 

Sunday, March 8

Sunday Jazz Brunch: On Sunday, March 8, Canyons in Blowing Rock will host the weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch with Todd Wright. Starting at 11 a.m., the event will feature live jazz music at Canyons located at 8960 Valley Blvd. in Blowing Rock. For more information about this event, call 828-295-7661.

Baha’i Devotional Meeting: There will be a Baha’i Devotional Meeting at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 8, at 283 Westbrook Dr. in Boone. The theme of the meeting will be “Perspectives on Fasting.” The Baha’i Faith is the youngest of the world’s revealed faiths. Its teachings center on unity and the removal of prejudice. Winter Tree Identification Hike at Grandfather Mountain State Park: Participants will learn how to identify local trees without the aid of leaves by learning differences in bark, limb, bud and branching patterns. Participants are encouraged to bring field guides to local trees. Program will last approximately two hours and hike 1 mile (2 miles round trip). Hiking boots are recommended. This is an outdoor event and those in attendance should come dressed for the current weather conditions.
