Feb. 20, 2015. The High Country has so many exciting events to offer its community and visitors. Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

Beech Mountain Retro Ski Weekend: Can dayglo ski clothes melt snow? Did video kill the radio star? Do girls really just want to have fun? All these questions – and more – will be answered during the fourth annual Totally ’80s Retro Ski Weekend at Beech Mountain. For more information about this event, click here.

Craft Enrichment Registration: For many High Country residents, the Michael R. Patricelli Craft Enrichment Program, offered each year at Appalachian State University, is a welcome outlet for creativity and a great way to learn a new craft or hobby. Serving both students and the community, the Craft Enrichment Program offers participants the use of professional equipment and dedicated instruction to guide them in their pursuits. Dawn Mathews Exhibit: Art exhibit “The Go-o-o-od Life” featuring artwork by Dawn Mathews will be on display during the first quarter of 2015 at the Caldwell Memorial Hospital Art-in-Healing Gallery, Mulberry Street Entrance. Free. Open 7-days/week 7 a.m.-8 p.m. daily.

Friday, Feb. 20

OASIS Fashion Show: On Friday, Feb. 20, The Local will host a fashion show sponsored by Haircut 101 as the second ever The Local P.A.S.S. event. The fashion show will benefit local charity, OASIS, which helps women and families in crisis. The fashion show will take place at The Local from 6-8:30 p.m., and will include a raffle with great items donated by River Street Ale House, CoBo, Red Onion, Haircut 101, Anna Banana’s, Casa Rustica and more. Proceeds from the raffle and from admission tickets will benefit the local nonprofit. For more information, click here.

Friday Night Jazz: Timberlake’s Restaurant at Chetola Resort will host Friday Night Jazz starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20. The Maureen Renihan Jazz Trio will perform for restaurant patrons.

Freakin’ Firkin Friday: On Friday, Feb. 20, Lost Province Brewing Company will host Freakin’ Firkin Friday at Five with the release of a special 12-gallon cask of beer at 5 p.m. along with live music.

Farm and Labor Tax Compliance Workshop: Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture (BRWIA) announces a workshop on Friday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Enterprise Center at 130 Poplar Grove Extension in Boone offering answers to all your questions about taxes and labor regulations for your farm or food business. Participants will learn about a variety of topics including agricultural tax return, how to do a chart of accounts, hiring labor and labor law compliance.

Contra Dance at Legends: Join us at Legends for another dance with The Ivory Boys, this time with caller Emily Rush! The Ivory Boys are known for their unique take on traditional Appalachian music by incorporating drums and accordian into the music. Just like last time, Legends is sure to have a lively atmosphere full of fun, music and dancing. Tickets are only $3 for students and $5 for the public. This is also a BYOB dance, if you are 21 and older.

Saturday, Feb. 21

Masquerade Party Benefit: The new Trout & Barrel Restaurant at 2968 Highway 105, Boone will host a Benefit Masquerade Party to help AJ Best raise funds to purchase, transport and distribute medical and school supplies to HIV/AIDS ravished Tanzania. All supplies will be personally distributed by Best and other Friends-Together volunteers in the Moshi region of Tanzania during July 2015. The benefit event, open to the public, at Trout & Barrel Restaurant will be a Masquerade Party from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21. Ticket prices will include live music from Bandam, Cajun inspired food and drink, a costume contest and a silent auction. Tickets in advance $30/person or $50/couple or $35/person at the door.

Faculty Performance: The Feb. 19 performance by the Hayes School of Music string faculty and clarinetist Andrea Cheeseman has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall at Appalachian State University. Admission is free and the public is invited. Members of the string trio are Eric Koontz, viola, Nancy Bargerstock, violin, and Kenneth Lurie, cello. Joining the faculty are Margaret Bragg, violin, Audrey Sutton, viola, and Nora Naughton, cello.

Symphony Band and Wind Ensemble: A range of compositions for symphony band and wind ensemble will be performed Feb. 21 at Appalachian State University. The free performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts. It is being held in conjunction with the Northwest District Band Clinic. Kevin Gray Richardson will conduct the Appalachian Symphony Band and John Stanley Ross will conduct the Appalachian Wind Ensemble. Graduate conductors are Onsby C. Rose and Matthew Brusseau.

Winter Hike at Elk Knob State Park: Come out for some great exercise and winter beauty as we brave the cold for some great views at the summit of the mountain. Meet at the Summit Trailhead on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 1:00 p.m. and dress appropriately for the weather keeping in mind that layering will work the best in cold and windy conditions. Raptors at Grandfather Mountain State Park: There are many kinds of birds that live in this area; some migrate, some are year round. Some eat seeds and some eat other birds and other small creatures…these birds are Raptors or Birds of Prey. Join Ranger Sicard for a PowerPoint presentation to learn about Raptors and their unique adaptations/features. For any question please call Ranger Sicard at the Park Office 828-963-9522.

12th Annual Dance Marathon: Dance Marathon is a fun and unforgettable 15 hour experience that is packed with fun activities, loads of food, great entertainment, and a lot of awesome dancing! To participate, students register with our online database, and pledge to raise $150 to support Western Youth Network and Parent to Parent Family Support Network, two outstanding non-profits that provide essential services to kids in our community. Last year a record breaking $33,246.49 was raised to benefit Western Youth Network & Parent to Parent Family Support Network and we are hoping to surpass that amount in 2015!

Sunday, Feb. 22

High Country Wedding Expo: You’re invited to the annual High Country Wedding Expo, which will take place on Sunday, Feb. 22, from 1-4 p.m. at the Boone Mall. The event will feature wedding professionals, vendors and special event professionals who can help to make your special day exactly what you’ve dreamed of. For more information, click here.

SFTC Slopestyle Finals: On Sunday, Feb. 22, Appalachian Ski Mtn.’s Terrain Park will host the final Shred for the Cup event of the 2015 season. The Volcom/Electric Slopestyle Finals will officially begin at noon. For more information about the final Shred for the Cup challenge, click here.

Sunday Jazz Brunch: On Sunday, Jan. Feb. 22, Canyons in Blowing Rock will host the weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch with Todd Wright. Starting at 11 a.m., the event will feature live jazz music at Canyons located at 8960 Valley Blvd. in Blowing Rock. For more information about this event, call 828-295-7661.

Guided Ranger Hike: Join Park Ranger Appling for a Guided hike up Grandfather Mountain’s Profile Trail. Learn what the Rangers look for and see while on patrol, along with stories of natural and cultural history and whatever surprises may await us on the hike. This program is limited to 10 participants and requires pre-registration.
