Check our site every Friday for something new and exciting to look forward to while you’re watching the hour hand crawl to 5 o’clock. Find live music down the street, explore a nearby town’s local secrets or try out a new square dancing class. There’s always something fun to do in the High Country.

Night Hike to Luthor Rock

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area in Ashe County will hold a Night Hike to Luther Rock. Patrons should meet at the park office at 8 p.m. Meet a park ranger for a one-mile hike along the ridgeline out to Luther Rock. Bring a small flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. Parts of the hike are considered strenuous and hiking at night can be physically challenging. Children must be closely supervised by parents.

The Hayes School of Music present their last concert of the semester in Appalachian State University’s Rosen Concert Hall at the Broyhill Music Center. The public is welcome. Rod Berry directs Jazz Ensemble II. Todd Wright will direct the Jazz Ensemble I.

The Coffee Buzz 5K

The Coffee Buzz 5K is a new endeavor International Appalachian (IntAPP) is taking on to help raise money for our Landon Hill Study Abroad Scholarship.

When: April 27 – registration is at 7:30 a.m.

Where: Appalachian State University campus

Avery County Chapter of Hunters Helping Kids Annual Banquet

Tickets are $225 for sponsors, $25 for couples, $15 for a single, $10 for 11 to 15 years old and youths 10 and younger are free. Contact Tony Hunter at (828) 733-3320 or Randall Clark at (828) 733-0834 for tickets. There will be an auction of wildlife prints and raffles for hunting, fishing and camping packages. There will be a kid’s gift for every child attending.

Dancing at the Rock

a community dance, will take place at the American Legion building in Blowing Rock beginning at 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. George Wilson and friends will provide country music to dance to. Cost is $8 for an individual or $15 for a couple.

Wild Game Dinner

Workshops will be at 4 p.m., with a meal at 6 p.m. and a program at 7 p.m. The speaker is Joe Byrd, outdoor writer and communicator. There will be music by Trey and Karen McPherson Dishner. Tickets are $12 each and available at the door. Proceeds will benefit an Ecuador mission trip June 21-30.

Feastival at Horn in the West

There will be live music, face painting, chair massage, a partner yoga class at 1 p.m. and yoga for beginners at 2 p.m. Cute kids from Ripshin goat dairy and baby ducks from Woodland Harvest Mountain will also be visiting. Local businesses will have information and  samples, including Farm Caf, Stickboy, Earth Fare, Broyhill Wellness Center and Green Mother Goods. Many nonprofits and student groups will be represented as well. Lunch will be available at food trucks. A $1 to $5 donation entrance fee is suggested and proceeds will benefit the F.A.R.M. Caf gardens and the BLAST afterschool program. Organized by ASU nutrition and foods students to promote the healthy aspects of the community, the event is geared toward anyone who wants to have fun and learn about nutrition and activity facts and resources.

NC Brews Walkabout

Footsloggers has partnered with Bald Guy Brew and Blowing Rock Produce and Provision for the free event. There will be live music, and beer tastings from Aviator Brewing and Old Hickory Brewery. It is coordinated by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce.

Beer Tasting Tour

To help celebrate the inaugural North Carolina Beer Month in April, Blowing Rock will host a NC Brews Walkabout Tasting Tour, set for Saturday, April 27. The event will feature lodging packages and a NC Beer Month beer stein from Traditions Pottery.

Annual Girl Scouts Dessert Tasting and Silent Auction

Two local Girl Scout troops will be hosting the event. Area restaurants will create desserts using Girl Scout cookies. Attendees will sample the desserts and vote for their favorite. There will also be a silent auction featuring items from area businesses. Proceeds will be used to help the scouts to attend Girls Unite! event in Orlando, Fla., and to complete silver and gold awards. Tickets are $6. Area restaurants are still being signed up to take part and items are still being collected for the auction.
