March 1, 2013. This weekend has a variety of things to do for anybody in the High Country. Whether you are looking for something to relieve the week’s stress or a wild night on the town, the High Country has something to offer that will trigger that interest. There are so many things to look forward to as the weekend quickly approaches.

Downtown Boone First Friday Art Crawl

On Friday, March 1, downtown Boone will be taken over by the monthly First Friday Art Crawl. Like always, this month’s crawl will feature food, drinks and live music with work and exhibitions from local artists. And as usual, everyone is invited to come out and enjoy some Friday night fun. Wear your big coats and long johns though, the temperature is going to be in the 20s this evening with upwards of 20+ mph winds.

Redleg Husky at Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Friday

The newly-opened Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone will host live Appalachain-themed music by Redleg Husky, a two-member group of Appalachian Music graduate students at ASU. The music starts at 5 p.m. and they plan to play until closing time. 

gggrGlengarry Glen Ross at ASU, Friday

Glengarry Glen Ross is by American playwright David Mamet, and the show opened on Broadway in 1984. The plot involves ruthless real estate salesmen who need to either make sales or lose their jobs. It will play at 7:30 p.m. in the I.G. Greer Theatre at ASU on March 1 and 2.

Rumors at LMC, all weekend

Are you looking for a night of fun and laughter? Join the Lees-McRae Performing Arts Department as they present Rumors, a comedy by Neil Simon. The play is running from Thursday, February 28 to Sunday, March 3.

Possum Jenkins at Boone Saloon, Friday

Boone-based Southern Rock band Possum Jenkins will take the stage at Boone Saloon on Friday night. The show kicks off at 10 p.m. and there will be a $5 cover charge. Attendees must be 21 or older. 

Spring Appalachian Dance Ensemble, Friday and Saturday

Five student choreographers will showcase their work alongside pieces by faculty members Emily Daughtridge and Sherone Price and London-based choreographer Jason Piper.

ASU men’s basketball vs. Chattanooga, Saturday

With just one victory separating itself from a first-round bye in next week’s Southern Conference Tournament, Appalachian State University men’s basketball hosts Chattanooga in a crucial SoCon battle at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Holmes Center.

ASU women’s basketball vs. Chattanooga, Saturday

Appalachian State University women’s basketball returns home for its final two regular season matchups. First up is Southern Conference foe Chattanooga on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at the Holmes Center.

Recess Wreck Less Rail Jam at ASM, Saturday

RECESS Presents the fourth annual Wreck Less Rail Jam, going down at App Terrain Park on Saturday March 2. This cash prize Rail Jam will be open to all Snowboarders and Skiers of all levels. There will be Beginner – Intermediate – Advanced – Womens Categories for each.

This will be a jam format event consisting of staple and unique rail features on all levels set up by your crew at ATP. 

Registration will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and the contest begins at noon. 

$15 Entry Fee – All cash from entry fees will go right back to the riders! The Cash will be divided up between Advanced 1st, 2nd and 3rd. This leaves tons of great prizes for Beginner and Intermediate! 1st Place Intermediate is definitely going home with a new Capita Snowboard!

The International Tenors at Heritage Hall, Saturday

Multi-media video plus tenors singing opera, musical theater, operettas and pop – great singers and a little humor! The International Tenors will be performing at Heritage Hall in Mountain City on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Come over to Peabody’s on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. and enjoy tasting some medium to high-end wines. Different importers and wineries are featured each week. The cover charge for the tasting is $5. 

High Country Wedding Expo Unveiled, Sunday

The 14th annual High Country Wedding Expo, presented by A.C.E.S. – the Association of Consultants and Event Services – will be unveiled this Sunday, March 3rd at the ASU Summit Trail Solarium from 1 to 4 p.m.

March 3 marks Sugar Bear’s Birthday Celebration another annual event that adds to the March Madness fuss at Sugar Mountain Ski Resort. Activities include the Great Bear Race, special treats, and of course cupcakes and ice cream. Kids and parents love this event.
