Weekend Roundup: 12 Things To Do This Weekend; Check ‘em Out and Make Plans Dec. 7-9

Dec. 7, 2012. This weekend has a variety of things to do for anybody in the High Country. Whether you are looking for something to relieve the week’s stress or a wild night on the town, the High country has something to offer that will trigger that interest. There are so many things to look forward to as the weekend quickly approaches.

Banner Elk Holiday Celebration

The Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce along with the Town of Banner Elk will host a family-oriented holiday celebration kicking off with a parade of lights in downtown Banner Elk. The festivities then move to Tate Evans Park in Banner Elk and will feature the North Pole Express Train Ride, more than 800 luminaries, Christmas tree and ceremonial menorah-lighting, the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus, the Alpacas from Apple Hill Farm as well as free refreshments.

Boone Brew Bash

Appalachian Homebrewing Supply will host the Boone Brew Bash, a gathering of local homebrewers and beer enthusiasts at the Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center. The event is free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to Bring Your Own Home Brew. The event will provide beer enthusiasts with a venue to share their own creations, discuss homebrewing and learn more about the hobby. No previous knowledge is required, so those interested in picking up the hobby are especially encouraged to attend.

Watauga Humane Society’s Christmas Open House 

Watauga Humane Society’s annual Christmas Open House will be held Saturday at the Irma Baker Lyons Adoption and Education Center. The staff continues the tradition of asking you to celebrate the season of sharing with them by bringing gifts for the animals. Santa and Mrs. Clause will be joining us for a fun photo opportunity for you and your pets.

‘Shop Local Saturdays’ – Boone Area Chamber’s Holiday-Shopping Campaign Begins

Just in time for holiday shopping, a Boone Area Chamber of Commerce promotion, “Shop Local Saturdays,” begins this Saturday, Dec. 1. Boone Area Chamber President Dan Meyer said the idea for the annual holiday-shopping campaign sprang from American Express’ “Small Business Saturday,” which takes place in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Blowing Rock Crime Author Glenn A. Bruce Book Signing

Blowing Rock crime writer and Appalachian State faculty member Glenn A. Bruce will offer his first book signing at Black Bear Books. He will have free bookmarks and plenty of paperback copies of his books. Bruce recently released his latest book “Rubric,” the story of the events that “send fictional Homicide Detective Mark Young into a spiraling free fall of change and self-examination” after a series of killings in his community.

Wine to Water Wine Tasting Benefit

Green Mother Goods will be hosting a benefit wine-tasting event for the locally-based international non-profit organization Wine to Water. Wine to Water’s main mission is to help provide clean drinking water to needy countries. All proceeds will go to Wine to Water. During Art Crawl don’t forget to stop by and taste some wine, help some less fortunate countries, and come enjoy live music and entertainment.

Catherine J. Smith Gallery BFA Senior Studio Fall Exhibition Opens

The Catherine J. Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University presents the BFA Senior Studio Fall 2012 exhibition at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts in Boone. The exhibition will be on view from Dec. 7, 2012 – Jan. 12, 2013, and includes work by candidates for the BFA in Studio Art. The BFA Senior Studio Fall 2012 exhibition titled “End of the World” features works by twelve student artists exploring a wide variety of studio techniques including drawing, painting, metals, fibers, ceramics, photography and multimedia.

Reading Day Eve Party with Bafoodus and Donnie Dies at Boone Saloon

Hailing from Boone, Bafoodus has been called “an unstoppable rock machine, intent on getting the party started.” With an eclectic mix of creepy funk, straight-up rock and aggressive jazz/pop fusion, there is something for everyone. They keep it fresh by performing sporadically and only in the greater Boone area due to probation restrictions.

The Native L and Supatight at Murphy’s

Supatight officially formed in the early summer months of 2008 in Durham, featuring Tyler Mack on bass and vocals, Max Palmer on drums and Michael Domanico and Torrey Beek on guitars. Nigel Kher joined the band on Sax shortly after the summertime, and the Supatight line up was complete.

Appalachian Musical Theatre Ensemble Presents Award-winning musical, ‘Rent’

The highly acclaimed musical “Rent” will make its regional premiere at Appalachian State University with two performances in Rosen Concert Hall by the newly formed Appalachian Musical Theatre Ensemble. Appalachian’s production involves more than four dozen students in the cast, crew and live orchestra. With book, music and lyrics by the late Jonathan Larson, “Rent” is a story of life, love and dealing with HIV/AIDS during the turn of the millennium. It won Tony, Drama Desk and Pulitzer Prize awards.

Free Tasting

Premier Wine Tasting at Peabody’s

Peabody’s will be having their weekly wine tasting for those who want a day to relax and do some tasting of the featured wines. Peabody’s has something that should strike the interest of all who have a pallet for good wine.
