Dec. 28, 2012. This weekend has a variety of things to do for anybody in the High Country. Whether you are looking for something to relieve the week’s stress or a wild night on the town, the High country has something to offer that will trigger that interest. There are so many things to look forward to as the weekend quickly approaches.

Boss Hawg Live at Sugar Mountain

boss-hawg_04Boss Hawg’s home pen is the mountain town of Boone. The Hawg formed in 2003 at a party on the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The band quickly discovered that combining their contemporary rendition of traditional Appalachian Mountain music with fun loving audiences produced a natural high-energy vibe that is reminiscent of the once-a-month barn dances from the turn of the century.

Yule Log Bonfire on Beech

What better way to welcome in the New Year than to celebrate with friends and family around a roaring Yule Log fire? Grab your blankets and hats and come to the Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria at 7:30 p.m. to have some hot cocoa, cider and s’mores as you cast your New Years wishes at the annual Yule Log Bonfire. Hayrides to see the lights of the Holidays will be leaving from the Bonfire free of charge.

ASU Men’s Basketball vs. Milligan College

Appalachian State University men’s basketball (3-8) finishes a two game homestand when it plays host to Milligan College (8-6) on Sunday. Sunday’s contest marks the final non-conference game of the season for the Mountaineers, who hit SoCon play full-time when they travel to Wofford on Jan. 8.

Visit Elk Knob State Park on Sunday for a one hour educational program about the different types of spiders that call North Carolina home. Remember, the more you learn about spiders, the less creepy they will seem to you.

Festival of Lights

Chetola Resort in Blowing Rock is the place to go to see Christmas Lights in the High Country. A drive through the resort reveals over 50,000 lights on display and the lights will stay on until Jan. 27, 2013.

Pet Adoption Fair

browseModern Subaru of Boone is hosting a Pet Adoption Fair on Dec. 28 in partnership with the Watauga Humane Society. Modern Subaru is paying the adoption fees. That is correct, if you come out to the fair and find the perfect cat or dog – Modern Subaru will pay for the adoption fees. There is one catch, you must adopt the day of the fair in order for Modern Subaru to pay your fees.

Sunday Horse Clinics at the High Country Riding School

Join High Country Riding School each Sunday afternoon for fun, educational clinics. Upcoming topics include the parents’ guide to horse crazy kids, communicating with your horse from the ground, buying your first horse, preparation to show and common trail obstacles.

Lost Ridge at Murphy’s

Rockin’ Boone for a decade now, Lost Ridge has shared the stage with Doc watson, John Skeehan, Tony Reece, Shannon Whitworth, Buddy Cage, and countless other Americana/Bluegrass Greats. The show kicks off at 10 p.m. with a $5 cover.

Sunday Jazz Brunch with Todd Wright & Friends at Canyons

Todd Wright, an Ambassador of Jazz for western North Carolina, joined the Appalachian State University music faculty in 1990. As Director of Jazz Studies he has been responsible for conducting Jazz Ensembles I and II, teaching courses in jazz improvisation, jazz history, jazz piano, jazz tunes and coaching combos.

Wine Tasting

Sparkling Celebration

The third annual Sparkling Celebration, a fundraising event to benefit the Avery Arts Council, takes place on Friday, Dec. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Tasting Room at Erick’s Cheese & Wine. Admission is free but a $10 donation is suggested.
