Weekend Roundup: 11 Things To Do This Weekend; Check ‘em Out and Make Plans: March 8 to 10

March 8, 2013. This weekend has a variety of things to do for anybody in the High Country. Whether you are looking for something to relieve the week’s stress or a wild night on the town, the High Country has something to offer that will trigger that interest. There are so many things to look forward to as the weekend quickly approaches.

NSJkAm-255x210Fresh Friday at ASM App Terrain Park

In hopes of getting the best photography possible, this Signature Feature Photo Jam will now begin at 4 p.m. The light should be better and allow for cleaner action shots than running our normal Fresh Friday Hours.

Head on over to ATP right after school, and session their signature Never Summer Feature from 4-6 p.m.

Registration will be from 2-3:30 p.m. in the Alpine Ski Shop, and the event will begin at 4. If you miss registration they will be keeping sign up going on the hill all session long!

Blue Ridge Kung Fu Demonstration/Fundraiser, Friday

Blue Ridge Kung Fu Arnis Academy presents a martial arts demonstration fundraiser at the Greenway Baptist Church Gymnasium on Friday, March 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. The demonstration is taking place to raise money for a sister of one the academy’s students who is receiving a kidney transplant from a separate sister.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAnti-Bullying Plays by Ensemble Stage, Friday

Ensemble Stage presents three anti-bullying plays on Friday, March 8, which will address the causes of bullying and its effects on the victims. Nearly 40 Blowing Rock Elementary School students auditioned for the plays, while 14 K-8 students were eventually cast for the age-appropriate plays, which combined will span about one hour.

Mr. WHS 5K Walk/Run, Saturday

The Mr. WHS 5K Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, March 9, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and the walk/run beginning at 8:30 a.m. This event is being done in memory of Leigh Cooper Wallace. 

All proceeds from this 5K Walk/Run will be going to the families that the 2013 Mr. WHS pageant is sponsoring this year. For those who don’t know, this annual all-male “beauty” pageant is Student Council’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Every year this show serves as a huge community-wide event that raises money for local families in need.

The all new Piccadilly Circus returns with an amazing show called BLAMMO!  You’ll see Cossack Warriors on horseback for the first time in America, the famous White Tiger Spectacular, the Motorcycle Nitro Gladiators race around the Giant Steel Globe, families can visit the free petting zoo and bottle feed camels, plus daring aerialists, contortionists, jugglers, acrobats and clowns that even make mom and dad laugh.

Nomadic at Boone Saloon, Saturday

Known for their dubstep and anthemic rock tunes, Nomadic will perform at Boone Saloon on Saturday night. The music starts at 10 p.m. and there will be a $5 cover charge. Attendees must be 21 years of age or older. 

Wine Tasting at Peabody’s, Saturday

Come over to Peabody’s on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. and enjoy tasting some medium to high-end wines. Different importers and wineries are featured each week. The cover charge for the tasting is $5.

ASU men’s basketball vs. Samford or Furman in Asheville, Saturday

Appalachian State University men’s basketball begins its quest for a Southern Conference Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament when it plays its first game in the quarterfinals of the SoCon Tournament in Asheville on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The Mountaineers, who earned a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed in the field of 12 teams, will take on the winner of No. 5 Samford and No. 12 Furman.

ASU women’s basketball vs. Charleston in Asheville, Saturday

Appalachian State women’s basketball will meet College of Charleston in the quarterfinals for its first game of the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament. Tipoff is set for Saturday, March 9 at 2:15 p.m. in Kimmel Arena. 

Sunday Jazz Brunch at Canyons, Sunday

Enjoy a Sunday brunch at Canyon’s in Blowing Rock. Todd Wright, the ambassador of jazz for Western North Carolina, and friends will provide the music.
