Kindergarten Orientation Begins End of March

Watauga County Schools Supt. Scott Elliott speaks to a class at Parkway Elementary.

Kindergarten orientation is set to begin at the end of March for children that will enter Kindergarten in Watauga County Schools next August.

Further information, along with a full schedule of events is available in the new “Welcome to Kindergarten” page on the WCS district website, available at http://www.watauga.k12.nc.us/domain/1258.

Kindergarten is for children who will be 5-years-old on or before Aug. 31, 2017. Children can enroll in kindergarten only at the school in their assigned attendance area, and parents and children must attend orientation at that school. Parents who aren’t sure which attendance area they live in can find out on the district website at http://www.watauga.k12.nc.us/domain/311 under “Attendance Area and Bus Route Information.”

Parents without internet access, or those seeking more information, may call Transportation Director Jeff Lyons at 264-6391 to confirm their attendance area.

The documents needed to register children for kindergarten include a certified original birth certificate; proof of immunizations; a copy of a physical exam completed since August, 2015; and two documents (such as utility bills) providing proof of current address. The immunizations that must be documented include five for DPT (diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus), four for polio, three for Hepatitis B, two for MMR (mumps/measles/rubella), two for varicella (chickenpox), and four each for Hib and PCV (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine).

Parents should contact the school their child will attend to confirm orientation times and other details about registration at that school.
