Aug. 21, 2014. Two local students received scholarships from Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation to help further their education.
Shauna Caldwell received a $2,000 scholarship to attend Appalachian State University, and Courtney Edwards received an $800 scholarship to attend Caldwell Community College.
Out of 82 applicants from Blue Ridge Electric’s service areas of Alleghany, Ashe, Caldwell, Watauga and Wilkes, a total of 12 students received scholarships for this academic year. Students are selected based on a number of factors including academic performance, community service and personal interviews.
In 55 years of awarding scholarships, Blue Ridge Electric has helped 383 local citizens receive $387,300 to attend college and prepare for the future. Up to $17,500 is allocated annually for individual scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 to help students seeking either a four- or two-year degree.
