Watauga Seed Library Grand Opening and Open House, Apr. 1

Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture and the Watauga County Public Library are pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the Watauga County Seed Library! Located at 140 Queen Street in Boone, the Seed Library’s mission is to make free seed available to promote food security, build community resilience, and create a culture of sharing.

“The Seed Library will help keep our region’s plant biodiversity alive. Through workshops and hands-on demonstrations, we will work with community members to help them grow their own food. Most importantly, we will work together to form connections with all of our neighbors through sharing knowledge and seeds!” said Lindsey Giglio, Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture’s Community of Gardens Coordinator.

Housed in repurposed card catalogs, the Watauga Seed Library offers free, open-pollinated seeds to community members who can take seed packets, grow and enjoy fresh vegetables from their gardens. Participants are also welcome to then save seeds from those plants, returning the seeds to the Seed Library.

“The Seed Library falls perfectly in line with our mission statement. We are excited to be hosting this resource and hope for it to be self-sustaining and continue for years to come. We appreciate the great support from Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture.” said Monica Caruso, County Librarian.

Organized in the fall of 2016, this endeavor is a collaborative partnership between the Ashe County Public Library, the Watauga County Public Library, and Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture. It is supported by the Ashe and Watauga County Cooperative Extension Services. And, later this spring, we plan to launch the Ashe Seed Library at the Ashe County Public Library.
