Jan. 12, 2015. The Watauga County Board of Education will meet on Monday, Jan. 12, at 5:30 p.m. inside the Gragg Education Center on Pioneer Trail off of N.C. 194 in Boone.

Agenda items include recognition of WHS English teacher Mary Ken Whitaker’s award from the N.C. English Teachers Association as the Outstanding English Teacher in the state for 2014-15 and the adoption or initial readings of more than 30 school policies. The county school system is working with the N.C. School Board Association to update school policies.

In addition, the school board will approve of a contract with Combs, Tennant and Carpenter, P.C. for audit services for 2014-15.

The school board will also consider staff’s recommendation to sell the house constructed through the Career & Technical Education program of Watauga High School. The house is located in Buckeye Estates on Lot #8. It has 1,600 heated square feet and 1,560 square feet in an unfinished basement. The starting asking price was $240,000.

After the bid deadline of last week, officials opened the sealed bids and the highest offer was $242,900. The all-cash offer was made by Sarah Tscherpel.

A memo to the school board from Supt. Scott Elliott and Finance Director Ly Marze reads, “It is our recommendation for the Board of Education to accept the highest bid which is the cash offer of $242,900 from Ms. Sarah Tscherpel.”
