Watauga Humane Society Offering 2013 Calendar; 100 Percent of Proceeds Go Directly to Humane Society

By Paul T. Choate

whscalDec. 13, 2012. The Watauga Humane Society is currently offering a 2013 calendar that is a great holiday gift for pet lovers all over the High Country. Each month features pictures of pet owners and their beloved furry friends and all proceeds from calendar sales directly benefit the humane society.

The opportunity to get into the calendar was first auctioned off at $1,000 per page during the 15th annual WHS Fur Ball, which was held in September at the Blowing Rock Country Club. Five of the pages were sold during the Fur Ball, with the remaining seven pages being sold during the following week immediately following the event.

Each donor had creative license during a professional photo shoot so that they and their pets were portrayed in just the way they desired.

“The project has been completely successful,” said Susanna Russell, WHS director of development. “With each month selling for a thousand [plus calendar sales] we’re looking to make around $23,000.”

Russell said the calendars are going fast — around 500 calendars have already been sold and they have only been out for a few days.

The WHS 2012 calendar costs $15 and is available at Precision Printing, Stick Boy Bread Company, the Animal Hospital of Boone/Appalachian New River Veterinary Associates, the Animal Emergency & Pet Care Clinic of the High Country, The Pet Place, Groomingdale’s and Pepper’s Restaurant.

The humane society offers adoptions of dogs for $95 and cats for $75.

“Even though we lose money on every adoption, we strive to keep our fee at an affordable price. Vaccine and medical costs have increased, but our costs have remained the same,” says the WHS calendar.

Adoption costs cover: age appropriate vaccines, microchipping, de-worming, heartworm testing, feline leukemia and FIV testing, free initial exams, one month of free pet health insurance through Shelter Care, a free “Training Your Shelter Dog” or “Your Adopted Cat” DVD and a $30-off Companion Obedience Course coupon with dog trainer John Quy.
