Hosted at the school on March 19, the 15th annual dinner, live auction and arts celebration drew in a huge crowd to support the Hunger and Health Coalition, a local nonprofit that aims to “relieve poverty and hunger in a compassionate manner for families and individuals who are experiencing economic hardship and food shortages.”

HHC provides assistance to local families in the form of food, medicine and referrals to other community resources, and students at Watauga High, led by educator Whit Whitaker, pulled out all the stops to support the nonprofit this year.

On Thursday morning, Whitaker, school leaders and student volunteers presented HHC Executive Director Elizabeth Young with a check for $12,600 raised through Empty Bowls, which exceeds last year’s $10,800.

This year’s event featured bowls made by local potters, live music from the rising stars behind The Tater Hill Mashers and food items from local restaurants like Woodland’s Barbecue, the New Public House, Pepper’s Restaurant, Troy’s 105 Diner, the Speckled Trout, F.A.R.M. Café, Casa Rustica, Bare Essentials, Stick Boy Bread Co. and Stick Boy Kitchen.
