Jan. 15, 2013. Principal Robert Ferris and CEO Daniel Robinson of SFL+A Architects presented the LEED Certification for Watauga High School at Monday’s Watauga County Board of Education monthly meeting.
LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The certification was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to provide an independent, third-party verification system of environmentally-friendly building designs.
This “green” building certification has been years in the making – as well as a detailed and an arduous process.
“And rightfully so … Our firm first engaged with the county in late 2004. It’s been about a seven-year legacy,” Robinson said. “Some of the central ideas that were important form the very start were sustainable features such as a [system that] collects rainwater, a geothermal system under the soccer field and a detailed day-lighting scheme that reduces electrical lighting loads. All these things help to achieve a sustainable high school and energy-reducing high school.”
