Watauga County Residents Urged to Prepare for Potential Severe Weather Impact

Hurricane Joaquin is threatening to bring severe weather to the high country depending on the route the storm will take. Weather officials in Blacksburg VA., are monitoring the possibility of a high impact, major and prolonged flooding event that could reach our area as early as tonight and last throughout the weekend and in to early next week. The potential for wind gusts over 20 MPH is also a threat. This weather brings the possibility of power outages, flooding, and downed trees.

When there is a threat of a flooding event, remember:

  • Floods can occur with little notice.
  • Listen to weather forecasts.
  • Never walk through moving water.
  • Never attempt to drive across flooded roads or bridges. Just a few inches of water can cause a car to float.
  • Dial 911 if you become trapped by flooding water.

Emergency Management urges residents to closely monitor weather conditions and forecasts now through early next week for this potentially significant weather event. Like and follow Watauga County Emergency Management on Facebook for weather updates and other important emergency information.
