June 19, 2013. Watauga County Sheriff Len D. Hagaman, Jr. said that the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office received a report on Monday referring to a possible paving scam in the Valle Crucis area.
The paver approached the homeowner and offered to patch holes in the driveway for $3.75 per foot. The homeowner agreed to have the holes patched. The paver then proceeded to pave the entire driveway without the homeowner’s permission and demanded $10,000 from the homeowner for the work performed.
In a release, Hagaman said he would like to remind the citizens of Watauga County that it is the time of year for citizens to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous contractors and that he encourages citizens to use licensed, local and well-recommended contractors.
Sheriff Hagaman suggests that citizens use recommendations from neighbors, local building contractors and the local Chamber of Commerce.
