Dec. 13, 2013. The Watauga County Board of Education, this week, recognized several people, including citizens, students and staff, at a school board meeting.
During the “public recognition” section of the meeting, Watauga County Schools also accepted posters, which were previously denied, from the American Legion that said “In God We Trust” because of references to religion. Before accepting the donation, WCS attorney Paul Miller said that “procedure used in the past and this case” means that the central office be the spot where those donations are proposed. He added that he couldn’t guarantee that the materials will be used and that no updates on how they are used will be given. Miller also said that the acceptance or non acceptance of any donations does not require board action.
“In the case of American Legion, it is being accepted by Dr. Fonseca,” Miller said.
Supt. David Fonseca accepted the posters, as depicted in the adjacent image and said he would encourage the use of the posters.
