Dec. 13, 2013. The Watauga County Board of Education, this week, recognized several people, including citizens, students and staff, at a school board meeting.
Savannah Hess of Parkway (at left) and Anna Jensen of Watauga HIgh School were recognized as the eighth grade and high school winners of the essay contest sponsored by the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The Daniel Boone Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was awarded a certificate of recognition for the many ways in which they support and encourage WCS students. Accepting the award were Zela Beckett (middle) and Mary Moretz.
Charlie Davis, age 81, received a special long-delayed high school diploma made possible by his service in the Korean War and by the support of Jennifer Combs (at right), who worked to provide the necessary documentation for his diploma to the NC Department of Public Instruction.
Jennifer Combs, Assistant to the Board of Education and to the superintendent, was thanked for her 14 years of outstanding service to the Watauga County Schools. Mrs. Combs, who has worked with five superintendents during her tenure, is retiring later this month.

During the “public recognition” section of the meeting, Watauga County Schools also accepted posters, which were previously denied, from the American Legion that said “In God We Trust” because of references to religion. Before accepting the donation, WCS attorney Paul Miller said that “procedure used in the past and this case” means that the central office be the spot where those donations are proposed. He added that he couldn’t guarantee that the materials will be used and that no updates on how they are used will be given. Miller also said that the acceptance or non acceptance of any donations does not require board action.
“In the case of American Legion, it is being accepted by Dr. Fonseca,” Miller said.
Supt. David Fonseca accepted the posters, as depicted in the adjacent image and said he would encourage the use of the posters.
