Oct. 19, 2012. Watauga County Schools added a new position recently, and the wife of Supt. David Kafitz will fill that role.
Starting in November, Amy Kafitz will become the school psychologist for Watauga County Schools, according to Director of Human Resources Stephen Martin, who added that Kafitz currently is a school psychologist in Union County, where she has been employed since 2004.
“We have added a position based on the needs of the system,” Martin said. “[The district] is over taxed with the amount of evaluations over the past few years.”
The position will serve preschool and the K-12 population. Martin said the district has received an increasing amount of preschool referrals and Kafitz will take on a majority of those preschool psychology referrals.
On Friday morning, Martin said her salary is going to be $47,750. Kafitz has 14 years experience with an advanced degree. According to salary schedules by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, a school psychologist’s pay is anywhere between $39,380 to $65,870 – depending on years of experience and education.
This is the second new position created in Watauga County Schools within the last month. Two weeks ago, current Parkway School Principal Tamara Stamey was appointed to the new position of director of elementary education.
