Mrs. Dare Greer Isaacs, age 89, of 12216 Highway 421 North, Zionville, passed away Tuesday morning, September 3, 2013, at her home.

Mrs. Isaacs was born May 28, 1924 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late William Henley Greer and Elmina Oliver Greer. She was a retired enviromental services employee for Watauga Medical Center, and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Isaacs is survived by one daughter, Sue Isaacs and husband Gary of Vilas; five sons, Bob Isaacs and wife Gail of Zionville, Hal Isaacs and wife Lynne of Lenoir, Carlton Isaacs and wife Mary of Zionville, Lynn Isaacs of the home, and Teddy Isaacs and wife Teresa of Boone, and one brother, Don Greer of Zionville. She is also survived by ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Isaacs; four sisters, June McGlammery, Ethel Perry, Martha Greer, and Mae Thomas, and seven brothers, Fontz Greer, Reverend Arnt Greer, Norman Greer, Raymond Greer, Von Greer, Clay Greer, and Mylo Greer.

Funeral for Mrs. Dare Greer Isaacs will be conducted Thursday evening, September 5, 2013, at 7:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 5:00 until 7:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Bill Hayden, Reverend Thomas Brown, and Reverend T.J. Wilson. Graveside services and burial will be conducted Friday morning, at 11:00 o’clock, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon, from 5:00 until 7:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the residence, 12216 Highway 421 North, Zionville.

Brian Kent ‘B. K.’ Dorsey, age 73, of Boone, passed away Monday afternoon, Sept. 2, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center. 

Mr. Dorsey is survived by his wife, Grace C. Dorsey; and two cousins, Carol Tench Huston of Boise, Idaho, and Larry Dorsey of Bozeman, Montana. 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosalea Dorsey; and his parents, Earl and Virginia Bush Dorsey. 

Memorial services for B. K. Dorsey will be conducted Friday afternoon, Sept. 6, 2013, at 3 o’clock at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, officiated by Rev. Cynthia Banks and Rev. James R. Niell. A reception will follow services in the Great Hall of St. Luke’s. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 170 Councill St., Boone, NC 28607.

Mr. Melvin J. Silverman, age 97, of Harbor Lake Circle, Boynton Beach, FL, and seasonal resident of North Carolina, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Silverman was born to the late Gershon and Kate Cohen Silverman. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter Michele Wells, and a sister; Beatrice Tobias.

He is survived by his wife; Roslyn Cohen Silverman of the home, one daughter; Barbara Silverman, of Miami, FL. Step-sons Keith Markbreiter, of Coppell, TX, and Ross Markbreiter of Holly Springs, NC; one Step-daughter, Wendy Markbreiter of Boca Raton, FL; one niece, Andrea Tobias; nine grandchildren; Bemjamin and Jeremy Kozyak, Ryan, Jason, Sara, Wells, Jessica, Daniel, Brandon, and Nicole Markbreiter.

Mr. Silverman was a WWII US Arny Veteran and a Salesman in the Box Manufacturing Industry.

Funeral Services for Melvin J. Silverman will be held at the Beth Israel Menorah Chapel in Boynton Beach, FL with entombment to follow in the Eternal Light Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Mrs. Judy Davis Bumgarner, age 63, of Boone, passed away Saturday morning, August 31st, 2013 at her home.

Judy was the daughter of Minnie Wilcox Davis and the late Paul Houck Davis of Boone. She was retired from Appalachian State University, where she was the Assistant Director of the Math and Science Education Center.

Judy is survived by her husband, Ron, of the home; her mother, Minnie Davis of Boone; a brother, Brent Davis and wife Pan of Boone; and a sister, Joyce Gates and husband Gene, also of Boone. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

She is preceded in death by her father, Paul Houck Davis.

Funeral services for Judy Davis Bumgarner will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, September 4, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Burl Greer. Entombment will follow in the Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 12:00 until 2:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the home of her brother at 189 Sally St. in Boone.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to High Country Hospice 136 Furman Rd Suite 4, Boone.

Tony Ray Johnson, Sr., age 41, of Creston, passed away Saturday afternoon, August 31, 2013.

Tony was born May 30, 1972 in Watauga County, a son of Johnny Ray Johnson and Junie Lipford Johnson Glenn Trivette. He was a retired truck driver for Shatley Construction and Paving Company, and a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, Tony is survived by his wife Lisa McCoy Johnson of the home; a daughter Samantha Johnson and a son Tony Ray Johnson, Jr. both of the home; two sisters Joleen Glenn Eastridge and her husband David of Warrensville, NC, Angela Gentry and her husband Russ of Winston-Salem, NC; three brothers Sharky and Scott Johnson both of Mountain City, TN, Gary Lee Trivette of Creston, NC; three nieces and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother Charles Glenn.

Funeral services for Tony Ray Johnson, Sr., will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Sutherland Baptist Church with Pastor Tommy Stevens, Reverend James Henson and Reverend Michael Drake officiating. Burial will follow at Potter-Main Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services.

The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 – 2:00 PM Thursday.

Mrs. Elsie Nichols Elrod, age 81, of Bradenton, Florida, formerly of Boone passed away Thursday, August 29, 2013 in Bradenton, Florida.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Merle Smith, D. Aug. 25, 2013

Merle Leroy Smith, 72, of Fleetwood, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2013 at his home. Born March 6, l941 in Cumberland, Maryland, he was a son of Walter Aaron and Irene Shipley Smith. Mr. Smith was an electronic engineer for Eurotherm Corp. in Reston, Va. and MTL in Manassas, Va. His love in life was his family and fishing with his grandchildren. 

Surviving are his wife, Janice Freeman Smith; his son, David Merle Smith and wife, Jacqi Schrand Smith, and their children, Hunter David and Logan Walter Smith, all of Manassas, Va.; and his daughter, Laura Smith and husband, Jeff Smith, and their children, Riley Kathleen and Drew Worth Smith, all of Charlotte. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Sandra Vining and Kathy Bennett. 

Private services will be held in Strongsville, Ohio. 

The family suggests memorials to Calvary United Methodist Church, 922 Railroad Grade Rd., Fleetwood, NC 28626.
