Mrs. Mary L. Ward (July 24, 1943 – Sept. 29, 2014)
Mrs. Mary Lee Love Ward, 71, of John Banner Road, Vilas, passed away Monday morning, Sept. 29, 2014 at her home. Born July 24, 1943 in Watauga County she was a daughter of the late Ed and Flora South Love. She was a homemaker and a craft maker.
She is survived by her husband Billy Ward, four daughters; Wanda Gobble and husband Don of Vilas, Ivy Jean Hollins and husband Richard and Elizabeth Faye Newcomb all of Hudson, and Bertha Louise Ward Spradling of Lenoir, and one son, Billy Joe Ward and wife Linda of Sugar Grove, eleven grandchildren, and a number of great grandchildren and three brothers, James Love and wife Isabella of Deep Gap, Noah Love and wife Susie of Morganton, and David Love and wife Anna Belle of Fleetwood. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by several siblings.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Love Ward will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Noah Love. Burial will follow in the Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 2 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Jacob Robert Gentry, Sr. (March 1, 1923 – Sept. 28, 2014)
Jacob R. (Junior) Gentry, Sr. of Boone, NC went to be with his Lord on Sept. 28, 2014.
The son of the late Robert Leander and Grace Norris Gentry, Jacob was a WWII veteran having served in Germany and France. He retired after 30 years of working as janitor at Parkway Elementary School. He was a farmer; he loved cutting wood, taking care of his cattle, and keeping his yard and flower beds at home properly trimmed with his weedeater.
In addition to his parents, Jacob was preceded in death by an infant son, 1 grandson – Robert Austin Potter; 1 sister – Mary Evelyn Gentry Branham; 2 brothers – Ray Gentry and Carroll Norris Gentry; 1 brother-in-law – Clark Miller; 1 nephew – Jeffrey Gentry.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Emma Lewis Gentry; four daughters – Judy Gentry, Nancy Gentry, Sarah Gentry Potter (Larry), and Martha Gentry all of Boone; two sons – Leslie Gentry (Loretta) of Deep Gap, and Jacob Gentry of Boone; five grandchildren: Kaye Miller Burdiss (Gary) of Millers Creek, Veronica Gentry Hill (James) of Zionville, Michelle Potter Evans (Ron) of Boone, Marie Potter of Lillington, NC, Derek Wilcox (Emily) of Johnson City, TN; eight great-grandchildren: Cody Burdiss and Cassie Burdiss of Millers Creek, Emily Hill and Natalie Hill of Zionville, Terri Evans and Storm Evans of Mountain City, TN, Ryan Harmon and Kaylyn Evans of Boone; two sisters: Viola Gentry Miller and Alma Gentry Ragan (Billy) of Boone; two brothers – Fred Gentry (June) of Riggins, Idaho and Roby Gentry (Jackie) of Free Union, VA., and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Jacob R. (Junior) Gentry, Sr. will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 30, 2014, at 2 p.m., at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Officiating will be Reverend Allen Marsh. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in the Morphew Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Ethel Parsons Jones (Jan. 25, 1917 – Sept. 28, 2014)
Ethel Parsons Jones, 97, of 6201 Castle Ford Road, Todd, passed away Sunday morning, Sept. 28, 2014, at Margate Healthcare Nursing Center in Jefferson.
Mrs. Jones was born Jan. 25, 1917 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Walter and Nellie Miller Parsons. She was a homemaker and a member of Pilot Mountain Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jones is survived by five daughters, Beulah Greer and husband Otis of West Jefferson, Dorothy Watson and husband Richard of Lenoir, Jean Greer and husband Jerry of Lenoir, Mildred Trivette and husband Ervil of Creston, and Virginia Miller and husband James, Jr. of Dover, Delaware; two sons, Clyde Jones and wife Kathy of Boone, and Ray Jones and wife Wanda of Fleetwood; one sister, Vergie Moretz of Boone; one brother, James Parsons and wife Ellaree of Lenoir, and one son-in-law, J.C. Trivette of Fleetwood. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 13 great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Dewey Jones; one daughter, Carol Trivette; three brothers, Howard, Clarence, and Walter Junior Parsons; three sisters, Lucille Watson, Ophelia Watson, and Ola Walker, and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services for Ethel Parsons Jones will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 1, 2014, at 2 p.m., at Liberty Grove Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1 to 2 p.m. Officiating will be Reverend John C. Elledge and Reverend David Trivette. Burial will follow in the Parsons Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon, from 1 to 2 p.m.

Pauline Pugh Thompson, age 90, of Boone, passed away Sunday, September 28, 2014. She was a native of Ashe County and the daughter of the late Paul and Grace Herman Pugh.
Funeral services for Pauline will be conducted Friday, October 3, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the Boone United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Memorial Park, Lenoir. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from one o’clock until 2 o’clock in the church.

An Thi Vo, 72, of Hillandale Drive, Boone, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 28, 2014, at Watauga Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband, Sieu Doan of Boone; one son, Vu Doan of Boone, and a granddaughter, Helen Giao.
Funeral services for An Thi Vo will be conducted Wednesday morning, Oct. 1, 2014, at 10 a.m., at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 9 to 10 a.m.

Doris Rosen, D. Sept. 27, 2014
Doris Brody Rosen passed away in her home in Miami Beach on September 27, 2014. Doris was born in Jamaica NY, the daughter of the late Jacob & Esther Brody. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 64 years, Martin L. Rosen, as well as her sister Eleanor Rashkind and her brother Alan Brody.
Doris is survived by her children Nancy Rosenblatt (Chuck), David Rosen (Michelle), & Debbie Davidson (Don), and granddaughters Amy, Barbara, Emily (David), Madeleine, Allison, Abagail, Rachel & Gillian.
Doris was a woman behind the scenes who made things happen. She had a lifelong interest in the arts, education and her gardens. She served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Community Center of Tidewater for over two decades, having served in numerous capacities, including Vice-President of Programming. In Miami she served on the Miami Opera Guild and the Miami Salon Group, to name but a few. In the mountains of North Carolina Doris served on the Board of Trustees of Lees- McRae College. At Appalachian State University she and her late husband established the Rosen Sculpture Walk, a nationally recognized juried competition, and The Martin & Doris Rosen Summer Symposium at the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, and Peace Studies.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to Nikki Denny for her care and devotion to Doris and the family. A funeral service will be held on Today, Sept. 30th at 12:00 p.m. at Temple Israel, Norfolk, with Rabbi Michael Panitz officiating. The family will sit Shiva at the home of Chuck & Nancy Rosenblatt Tuesday following the service and Wednesday. Services will be held Tuesday and Wednesday night at the home at 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Temple Israel of Norfolk, the Jewish Community Center of Tidewater, Martin & Doris Rosen Summer Symposium at Appalachian State University, or a charity of one’s choice. Patsy Mize Cable (Nov. 8, 1927 – Sept. 25, 2014)
Patsy Jean Mize Cable, 86, of Rush Branch Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014 in Lexington. Born Nov. 8, 1927 in Lexington to Howard and Julia Lanning Mize.
She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Mrs. Cable was a graduate of Lying In Nursing College of Chicago. She was a registered nurse at both Forsyth and City Hospitals in Winston and Watauga Medical Hospital in Boone. Patsy was a member of the Retired Nursing Association at Forsyth Hospital.
Mrs. Cable is survived by her husband of 43 years, Howard Cable; four brothers, Don Mize, Murel Mize & wife, Carolyn, Allan Mize and wife, Jill, and Dennis Craig Mize and wife, Rhonda, all of Lexington; six sisters-in-law, Mildred and Clara Mize, both of Lexington, Nancy Mize of Lynchburg, Va., Linda Mize of Lexington, Betty Jo Cable of Sugar Grove, and Hazel Farthing and husband, Edmond, of Vilas. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Bobby, Eddie, Max, Levens, Vann and Steve Mize.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Sept. 28, at 3 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in Sugar Grove, officiated by Pastor Daniel Lawrence and Rev. Derek Wilson. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m., prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Cable-Matheson Family Cemetery.

Anna Lee McKinney Shook (March 12, 1942 – Sept. 24, 2014)
Anna Lee McKinney Shook, 72, of R.J. Aldridge Road, Banner Elk, passed away Wednesday morning, September 24, 2014, at her home.
Mrs. Shook was born March 12, 1942, in Avery County, a daughter of the late Will McKinney and Odie Oakes McKinney.
Mrs. Shook is survived by a daughter, Darlene Rondon of Banner Elk; a son, Glenn Shook and wife Ellen of Deep Gap; two grandsons, Hunter Shook of Deep Gap and Keegan Rondon of Banner Elk; one granddaughter, Hayla Shook of Deep Gap; three sisters, Sue Duckworth of Newland, Lucy Shook and husband Dave of the Grandfather Community, and Hazel Pyatte and husband Hugh of Banner Elk, and one brother, Ray McKinney and wife Peggy of Banner Elk. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ralph Shook; two sisters, Jorita Wise and Joyce McKinney, and a brother, Tommy McKinney.
Funeral services for Anne Lee McKinney Shook will be conducted Saturday morning, Oct. 4, 2014, at 11 p.m., at Watauga Baptist Church in the Foscoe Community. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10 to 11 a.m. Officiating will be Reverend R.D. Watson. Burial will follow in the Watauga Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Hampton Funeral Service.
