Kathleen Winebarger Phillips, age 92, of Conway, South Carolina, a native and former resident of Boone, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Conway Medical Center in Conway, South Carolina.

Mrs. Phillips is survived by three sons, John Seagle and wife Lucy of Cherryville, North Carolina, Larry Seagle and wife Debbie of Poway, California, and Victor Seagle and wife Tammy of Conway, South Carolina. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, three great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Blaine Phillips; one son, David Seagle; her father and mother, Finley Miles Winebarger and Bessie Phillips Winebarger; one brother, Victor Winebarger, and two sisters, Georgie Phillips and Mildred Greer.

John Rudy Kondor, age 83, of Deep Gap, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013, in Bradenton, Florida.

Mr. Kondor is survived by two daughters, Sonna Ruchala of Mattson, Illinois and Randa Kondor of Deep Gap, and two sons, Scott Kondor of Parrish, Florida and Shayne Kondor of Powder Springs, Georgia and Washington, D.C. He is also survived by three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Mari Kondor.

Mary Jane Fiorella Todd, age 69, of Middle Fork Road, Blowing Rock, passed away Monday morning, September 16, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mary Jane is survived by her husband, Rick Todd of the home; one daughter, Elizabeth Lekanides of Vero Beach, Florida; one son, Alex Holewinski and wife Jill of Vero Beach; two grandsons, Zander and Gavin Lekanides, both of Vero Beach, and one brother, Richard Fiorella of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Clement “Andy” Fiorella and Josephine Valeria Fiorella.

Funeral arrangements for Mary Jane Fiorella Todd are incomplete at this time.

Marie Dotson Watson ,age 82, of Boone, much loved wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend, died peacefully, September 16, 2013, at her home.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Brumit and son-in-law, Joe of Asheville, and devoted nephew, Arthur”Bud” Ashley and his wife Barbara of Boone. Mrs. Watson is also survived by two sisters, Dorothy Bruce of Winston-Salem and Peggy Norris of Pfafftown, and one brother, Dale Dotson of Boone. Mrs. Watson is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, Glenn Martin Watson, three brothers, Kenneth, Marvin, and Floyd Dotson, and two sisters, Margaret Demster, and Myrtle Whitman.

The family would like to extend special thanks to lifelong friends, Peggy and Bill Austin for all their love and support.

Funeral services for Marie Dotson Watson will be conducted Wednesday morning, September 18, 2013, at 11:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Herbert McCoy and Reverend Chuck Campbell. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

The family will receive friends Wednesday morning, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock, at the funeral home, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Medi Home Hospice of Boone, PO Box 1357, Newland, North Carolina, 28657.

Joseph C. Hyland of Boone died peaceful on Friday evening Sept 13th, 2013, surrounded by family & friends. He was born in Mayfield, Pennsylvania on July 22, 1927 to Joseph Francis and Agnes Hyland. He had three brothers, James, Charles and Paul, and an infant sister, Agnes, and his wife, Frances Miller Hyland, who preceded him in death.

Upon graduating high school in Pennsylvania, Joe enlisted in the Navy and served from 1944-1947. Following an honorable discharge from the service he moved to the Washington DC area where he met and married Frances Miller. He began working as a barber and eventually owned and operated his own shop in Arlington, Virginia for42 years. He raised two daughters, Elizabeth and Patricia. 

Upon retiring he moved to the NC mountains and settled with his wife, Frances, in Boone. Joe was actively involved with St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church and became a long time volunteer with Watauga County meals-on-wheels and other civic organizations. He was a great sports fan who loved to attend baseball and football games, especially the Washington Redskins and ASU football.

He is survived by his daughters, Liz Beckmeier and husband, Bill, in Arlington, and Patricia Hyland Patella and husband, Carmen, in Boone; and four granddaughters, Lani Dieterle and husband, Sean, in Charlotte, Saedra Patella in Charlotte, Caroline Hesse and husband, Dustin, in Falls Church, Va. and Celena Patella in Blowing Rock, NC. He also has four great-grandchildren, Josie and Max in Charlotte, Ella in Falls Church and Devon in Blowing Rock. Joe is also survived by nephews and nieces, Paul, Tommy, Chuck, Peggy, Kathy and extended family in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, September 16th, at 11 AM at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, officiated by Father Dave Brzoska. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow at Mt. Lawn Memorial Park. 

Memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, in care of Dr. Peter Haibach, 216 Donnies Drive, Boone, NC 20607, or to Meals on Wheels project, 132 Poplar Grove Connector, Suite A., Boone, NC 28607.

Johnnie Kaye Lloyd, 69, of Deck Hill Road, Boone, passed away Thursday, September 12, 2013, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk. Born November 1, 1943 in Lancaster, SC, she was a daughter of John and Kathryn Ingram Lloyd. Miss Lloyd was a member of Emanuel Baptist Church in Lancaster.

She is survived by her sister, Melvrene Lloyd Padgett and husband, Harry, of Boone; two nephews, Rev. John Lloyd Pagdett andwife, Annette, of Boone, and Harry Padgett II and wife, Sue, of Wilkesboro; niece, Melva Pezzella and husband, Tony, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and grand nieces, and nephews, Hannah, Julia, Noah, Nathaniel, and Jonathan Padgett. 

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 18, at 2 PM at the Lancaster Funeral Home Chapel in Lancaster, SC, officiated by Rev. John Lloyd Padgett and Rev. Curtis Cameron. The family will receive friends Wednesday, one hour prior to services, at Lancaster Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Jeannie Andrews Bennett, age 64, of Scottsburg, Indiana, and a former resident of Blowing Rock, went to join her loved ones with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at her home. Born February 28, 1949 in Statesville. She was a homemaker and formerly worked as a secretary and school bus driver. 

Jeannie is survived by her daughter, Mary Ruth Farr and husband, Billy, of Austin, Indiana; her son, James Bennett of Boone; one sister, Sue Moore and husband, Floyd, of the Valle Crucis community; her aunt, Janice Foster of Blowing Rock; four grandchildren, Ashley and Sarah Farr, and William and Elliott Bennett; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Carl Bennett; and her parents, James Claude and Louise Foster Andrews.

A Celebration of Life services was conducted Monday, September l6th, at the Collins Funeral Home Chapel in Scottsburg, Indiana. 

Locally, memorial services will be conducted Saturday morning, September 21, 2913, at 11 o’clock, at the Grandfather Community Center in Foscoe, officiated by Dr. David Luster. The familh will receive friends Saturday morning from 10 until 11 o’clock, one hour prior to services. A private burial will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock. 

The family will be at the home of Sue and Floyd Moore, 528 Dewitt Barnett Road, Vilas. 

Memorial to honor Jeannie may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Gayle Biddix Garland, age 70, of Church Road, Boone, passed away Wednesday evening, September 11, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Gayle was born August 27, 1943 in Mitchell County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Arnce Biddix and Zeola Hall Biddix. Gayle, also known as Mama Gayle, Nana, and Little Mama, was such a joy to the lives of so many. She was a beloved wife and great friend. Gayle was the mother of 2, but she loved the whole community of children. She was the quarterback to both sides of the neighborhood football games, the mother who drove the girls to concerts before they could drive themselves. She was the Nana who would cook biscuits and gravy for as many little boys as her grandsons would bring over for breakfast, and she loved every minute of it.

When Gayle entered a room, it lit up from her ever present smile and her radiance from within. She will be missed terribly by her family and friends.

Gayle is survived by her husband, Carroll E. Garland of the home; one daughter, Sonya Ann Garland and husband C.J. Peterson of Valle Crucis; one son, Carroll Alan Garland and wife Paige of Boone; grandsons Lance Loveless of Raleigh and Ryan Loveless of Johnson City, TN, twin grandsons, Wade and Wyatt Garland of Boone; one step-granddaughter, Lindsey Peterson of Valle Crucis; one sister, Ila Biddix Phillips of Santa Maria, California; one brother, Alan Biddix and wife Melda of Spruce Pine; one sister-in-law, Susan Garland Saunders of Madisonville, Tennessee, and one brother-in-law, Calvin Garland and wife Angie of Atlanta, Georgia. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Donna Kay Biddix Burleson and Norma Jean Biddix Woody, and one brother, Lt. Col. Harold Biddix.

Funeral services for Gayle Biddix Garland will be conducted Sunday afternoon, September 15, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Foscoe Christian Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Dan Burks, Reverend Toby Oliver, and Reverend Mike Lamb. Burial will follow in the Foscoe Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, from 5:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to, Grandfather Home for Children, PO Box 98, Banner Elk, North Carolina, 28604.

Mary Pauline Summers Rogers, age 81, of Land Harbor, Newland, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville. 

Born August 2, 1932 in Iredell County, she was a daughter of Charles and Cora Bowles Summers. Mrs. Rogers was a member of Vanderburg United Methodist Church in Mooresville. She was employed by HUD, a government housing authority. 
    
Surviving are her husband, John B. Rogers of the home; three sons, Charles Forest Rogers, of Mooresville; David Brent Rogers of Bakersville; and Bradley Scott Rogers of Newland; seven grandchildren: Melynda Burkett, Allison Rogers, David Daza, Chase Rogers, Candice Rogers, Brittany Kolstad and Razuel Sanders and ten great grandchildren.
