Mr. Cecil Watts Farthing, 90, of Hillandale Drive, Boone, passed away Monday morning, Sept. 15, 2014 at home.

Born May 27, 1924 in Watauga County he was a son of the late Edward Grey and Ora Pennell Farthing. Cecil was a member and former Deacon at the First Baptist Church. He was a WWII Veteran, having served in the US Navy on the USS Bates. Following retirement from the US Postal Service, Cecil and his wife operated the LeGlacier Ice Cream Shop. Cecil was a member of the Boone Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Hayes Farthing, one daughter, Pamela Parker and husband Tom of Dobson, two sons; Eric Farthing of Boone and Randy Farthing and wife Cathy of Roanoke, Virginia, seven grandchildren, Ian Farthing of Asheville, Robbie Farthing and wife Melisa of Roanoke, Sarah H. Farthing of Boone, Rick Farthing and wife Ashlee of Kinston, Grey Farthing and wife Lindsay of Winston-Salem, Carrie Bednarski and husband Fred of Boone, and Alyssa Parker of Dobson, three great grandchildren, Charlie Farthing, Wyatt Farthing and Harper Belle Farthing, and one brother, Rhea Farthing and wife Florence of Boone. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Miller and Mildred Wright, and two brothers, Grey and Bruce Farthing.

Funeral services for Mr. Cecil Farthing will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Roy Dobyns and Rev. Tom Parker. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church. Jane Lenora Parkins Stilling (Oct. 18, 1939 – Monday, Sept. 15 2014)

Former Boone resident Janie Lenora Parkins Stilling passed away on Monday, Sept. 15, 2014.

Jane was born on Oct. 18, 1939 in Greensboro, NC to David Frank Parkins and Janie Hawkins Parkins. An avid learner, she studied at the University of South Carolina (BA, 1964), Appalachian State University (MA 1978), and Florida State University (1982).

Jane Stilling was a distinguished Greensboro area educator, teaching 22 years (1983-2005) on the faculty of Guilford Technical Community College and chairing the Developmental Education Department for seventeen of those years. In 2005 Jane received the National Association for Developmental Education’s coveted Award for Outstanding Service to Developmental Education Students.

Jane was also well-known in Greensboro’s antique dealer and collector community–selling old furniture, accessories, and linen goods from her booth at Antique Market Place and online.

A devoted mother and family woman, Jane leaves behind son Adam Byrne Stilling and daughter Nora Stilling Pauley and their families: daughter-in-law Tammy R. Stilling, grandchildren Victoria Stilling, Samantha Stilling, and Luke Stilling and son-in-law Craig W. Pauley and granddaughter Sierra Pauley. Also in mourning are Jane’s sisters Cynthia K. Mizzell and Sally P. Gilbert, as well as Roger J. Stilling, Glenn Ellen Starr Stilling and numerous other friends and family members.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday September 18, 2014 at Forbis and Dick North Elm St.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday September 19, 2014 at Forbis and Dick North Elm St Chapel, and interment will immediately follow at the Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Dallas G. Culler (Sept. 3, 1930 – Sept. 14, 2014)

Dallas G. Culler, 84, of Archdale, North Carolina, a native and former resident of Boone, passed away Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014, at North Point of Archdale.

Mr. Culler was born Sept. 3, 1930 in Watauga County, a son of the late Tracy and Bonnie Lee Barnes Culler. He was a retired upholsterer for Dapha Furniture Manufacturing and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Culler is survived by three daughters, Dianne Wicks and husband Lloyd, Jr. of Pelzer, South Carolina, Debbie Hendren of Thomasville, and Tina Ayers and husband Ronnie of Archdale; one son, Gene Culler and wife Sherry of Troy, North Carolina; four sisters, Celia Culler of Boone, Anna Lee Hinman and husband Clarence of Bay City, Michigan, Ruth Ellen Lockridge of Morganton, and Ollie Jean Yoder of Bay City, Michigan, and one brother, Max Culler of Thomasville. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, seven great great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Coffey Culler; one son, Dallas Mark Culler, and one brother, Lloyd Culler.

Graveside services for Dallas G. Culler will be conducted Wednesday morning, Sept. 17, 2014, at 11 p.m., at Jont Brown Cemetery in Boone. Officiating will be Reverend Gordon Noble. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by the United States Air Force and American Legion Post 103, will follow the graveside service.

Mary Hoffman Farthing, 99, of Goshen Creek Lane, Boone, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 14, 2014, at her home.

Mrs. Farthing was born Oct. 25, 1914 in Caldwell County, a daughter of the late Jasper and Vera Perry Hoffman. She was a retired school teacher and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Boone. Mrs. Farthing also attended Deerfield United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Farthing is survived by two daughters, Abbey Jo Courtney of Kelso, Washington and Victoria Farthing Leonard and husband Gary of Stafford, Virginia; two grandsons, Ted Leonard of Woodbridge, Virginia and Jim Leonard of Stafford, Virginia and Davenport, Iowa, and one brother, William Hoffman and wife Pat of Boone. She is also survived by numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Teddy Cline “T.C.” Farthing; one daughter, Penny Farthing; three sisters and one brother.

Memorial services for Mary Hoffman Farthing will be conducted Friday afternoon, Sept. 19, 2014, at 2 p.m., at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Doug Sterrett.

Herbert was born Dec. 5, 1928 in Watauga County, a son of the late Emannuel Arkie Hampton and Mary Ann Storie Hampton. He was a retired public school teacher and was a former deacon and member of Middle Fork Baptist Church. Herbert served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Herbert is survived by one daughter, Lu Anne Alion and husband Dan of Charlotte, and two grandsons, Tyler Alion of Columbia, South Carolina and Bradley Alion of Tallahassee, Florida. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Lou Rogers Hampton, and one son, Larry W. Hampton.

Funeral services for Herbert H. Hampton will be conducted Monday morning, Sept. 15, 2014, at 11 p.m., at Middle Fork Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 10:00 until 11:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Pastor Peter Vandenburg. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by the United States Air Force and American Legion Post 130, will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

Joseph Ira Rosola, age 56, of 178 Pine Gap Road, Blowing Rock, passed away Friday, September 12, 2014, at his residence.

Joseph was born July 22, 1956 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Joseph M. Rosola and Joyce Weaver Rosola. He was a wonderful husband and considered the best brother ever. Joseph loved his niece and nephew so very much, along with his great-niece and great-nephews. He was a member of Faithbridge United Methodist Church where he was know as the “Voice of Faithbridge”. Joseph was an avid sports fan.

Joseph is survived by his sister, Jayne E. Hodson and husband Sherwood of Boone; one niece, Jessica Courtney and husband Sims of Sorrento, Florida, and their children, Skyler, Landon, and Brooke; one nephew, Denver Patterson of Boone, and one uncle, Nicholas Rosola of Las Vegas, Nevada. He is also survived by his church family and friends at Faithbridge United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Walker Rosola.

Memorial services for Mr. Joseph Ira Rosola will be conducted Thursday, September 18, 2014, at 3:00 o’clock, at Faithbridge United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Pastor Ben Carson.

Bob was born June 12, 1928 in Whiteville, North Carolina, a son of the late Miller Fuscia “Hardrock” Hardison and Betty Smith Hardison. He was a retired employee of the Sears Robuck & Company and a member of Greenway Baptist Church in Boone.

Bob is survived by one son, Robert “Hardy” Hardison, Jr. and wife Holly of Lincolnton; one daughter, Tami Lea Hardison of St. Augustine, Florida; one step-daughter, Susan Rogers and husband Fred of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; one grandson, Robert “Little Bobby” Hardison, III of Lincolnton; one granddaughter, Shelley Lynn Davis of Atlanta Georgia; one step-granddaughter, Sarah Rogers of Jacksonville Beach; one great granddaughter, Taylor Davis of Atlanta; one great-grandson, Austin C. Ramsey of St. Augustine; one brother, Wallace Hardison and wife Alice of Davenport, Florida;; two sisters, Dorothy Christine Smith and husband Bill of St. Paul, North Carolina, and Jewel Grey Turner and husband Richard of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Odis Paul Hardison, Charles Henry Hardison, and David Hardison.

Hubert was born June 13, 1933 in Watauga County, a son of the late Harvey and Lillian Preswood Shook. He was a retired diesel mechanic for C.H. Shook Truck Service and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Hubert is survived by one daughter, Lisa Shook and her fiancé, Tony of Banner Elk; one son, David Shook and wife Sherry of Johnson City, Tennessee; one step-son, John Driggers of Banner Elk; one grandson, Cody Shook of Banner Elk; two granddaughters, Jessica Shook of Findlay, Ohio, and Ashely Shook of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Homer Shook of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Dale Shook and wife Loretta of Spruce Pine, and one sister, Thelma Gibson of Kingsport, Tennessee.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his previous wives, Emma Jean Storey Shook and Jane Rankin Stowe Shook; three brothers, Johnny, Colonel, and Carlos Shook, and one sister, Wilma Bare.

She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Robert L. and Lucy N. Norris; her step-mother, Nina N. Norris; her husband, Edwin R. Denney; one daughter, Loretta D. Graves; two sisters, Jessie N. Padgett and Bertie Norris, and two brothers, Coy J. Norris and Raevon Norris.

June was born May 30, 1934 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Clement Glenn Greer and ruby Winebarger Greer. She was a retired employee of Vermont American, Inc. in Boone, and was a member of Rutherwood Baptist Church.

June is survived by one son, James McLean of the home; two grandsons, Dwayne Hicks and Tony Hicks, all of Sugar Grove; one granddaughter, Canessa Hicks of Sugar Grove; one brother, Eddie Greer and wife Mary Helen of Fleetwood; one sister, Linda Hicks and husband Tommy of Buxton, North Carolina; nephews, Tim Greer of Crossnore and Jimmy Warnick of Buxton; three special nieces, Sherry Greene and husband Stacy of Deep Gap, Donna Catone and husband Joe of Boone, and Angela Greer of the Cove Creek Community, and her close friend Betty Church and her family and friends. She is also survived by a number of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, June Kathleen Hicks; one son, Victor Kent Winebarger, and one sister, Jean Watson.

Mr. Gurney Duckworth, Jr., 81, of 495 Norman Road, Boone, the Foscoe Community, passed away Wednesday morning, Sept. 10, 2014, at his home.

Gurney was born April 5, 1933 in Avery County, a son of the late Gurney Duckworth, Sr. and Brazilla Braswell Duckworth. He was the manager, for 14 years, of the Western Steer Restaurant in Boone and a member of Grace Baptist Church. Gurney served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict.

Gurney is survived by his wife, Martha Norman Duckworth of the home; one son, Ronnie Duckworth and wife Debbie of Banner Elk; three daughters, Barbara Blair of Elk Park, Melissa Munday and husband Terry of Creston, and Brazilla Norris and husband Wade of Boone; nine grandchildren, Deanna Eirich and husband Steve, Daniel Duckworth, Vanessa Ward and husband Ricky, Bobby Blair and fiancée Misty, Amanda Munday, Jared Munday, Jeremy Munday, Rebecca Norris and fiance Michael Hardy, and Jessica May and husband Ben; nine great-grandchildren, Emily Ward, Logan Blair, Skylar, Kara, and Allie Blair, Deovion Norris, Addison and Isla Eirich, and Connor Munday; two brothers, Wayne Duckworth and wife Ann, and Ted Duckworth and wife Hilda; two sisters, Mildred Buchanan and husband James, and Wilma Hicks and husband Lee; one sister-in-law, Sue Duckworth, and one brother-in-law, Gene Moser. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Gurney Duckworth, Jr. will be conducted Saturday afternoon, September 13, 2014, at 3:00 o’clock, at Grace Baptist Church in the Foscoe Community. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 3:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Jeff Fox and Reverend Jack Jones. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by the United States Marine Corp, American Legion Post 130, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in the Tanglewood Cemetery in Linville.

Mr. Tilmoth H “Tim” Inman, immensely loved & eternally remembered husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, age 62, of Blowing Rock passed away Wednesday morning, September 10, 2014 at Watauga Medical Center. Born August 21, 1952 in Robeson County, he was a son of the late Tilmoth H Inman and Janie Benton Inman. Tim Was a Vietnam Veteran, having served in the Air Force. He was a licensed general contractor and one great man.

He is survived by his wife, Lori Inman, three children, Ashley Hall and husband Matt of Huntsville, Alabama, Brandi Criswell and husband Terry of Prattville, Alabama and Tilmoth H Inman, III (Trip)and wife Jennifer of Wetumpka, Alabama, one grandson, Benton Hall of Huntsville, Alabama, and two brothers, Steve Inman and wife Karen of Cerra Gordo, North Carolina, and Fox Inman of Evergreen, North Carolina.

A service to celebrate the life of Tim Inman will be held on Saturday, September 20th at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel.
