Mr. Carl Steven Greene, age 75, of Old US Highway 421, South, Deep Gap, passed away Sunday evening October 6, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center. He was born September 21, 1938 in Watauga County. Carl was a retired carpenter and attended Ashe County Worship Center. 

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Velma Hamby Greene, one son, Hank Greene and wife Kim of Deep Gap, two daughters, Carlene Greene and husband Ricky of Fleetwood and Susan Call and husband Chuck of Deep Gap, one daughter in law, Lisa Greene of Deep Gap, nine grandchildren; Justin Greene and wife Heather, Shaun Greene and wife Melanie, Adam Greene and wife Kayla, Tylor Greene and wife Penny, Ceirra Murphy and husband Drew, Kyle Greene, Ryan Greene, Kaelin McNeill Greene and William Call, seven great grandchildren, Vandie and Andon Greene, Tinley Murphy, Gage and Aira Greene, and Ella and Walker Huff, one sister, Debbie Panel and husband Larry of Belmont, and one sister in law, Nancy Hamby of Deep Gap. He was preceded in death by one son, Ricky Carl Greene and his parents Denise Greene Payne and William Ransom Payne.

Funeral services for Mr. Carl Steven Greene will be conducted Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Chuck Call, Rev. Charlie McCoy, Rev. Rick Cornejo and Rev. Shaun Greene.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening prior to the service from 5 o’clock until 7 o’clock at the funeral home. Graveside services and burial will be private. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Mt. Paran Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Brice Greene, 11820 US Hwy 221 South, Fleetwood, NC 28626 or to the Ashe County Worship Center Building Fund, PO Box 1711, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Rachel Millsaps Arnette, age 83, of Timber Ridge Road, Sugar Grove, passed away Saturday afternoon, October 5, 2013, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mrs. Arnette was a homemaker, and a member of Timbered Ridge Baptist Church.

Mrs. Arnette is survived by her husband, Boyd W. Arnette, of the home; three daughters, Margaret Reece and husband Darryel of Elk Park; Mildred Denney of Clemmons; and Patricia Horn of Winston Salem; three grandsons, Gregory Reece of Sugar Grove; Brock Denney and Kevin Denney of Clemmons; two granddaughters, Nicole Shomaker and husband Travis of Sugar Grove; and Amanda Horn of Winston Salem; two great-granddaughters, Avery Denney of Winston Salem and Brooke Shomaker of Sugar Grove; two brothers, Arvel Millsaps and wife Pauline, and Allen Millsaps and wife Gail of Sugar Grove; three sisters, Julie Parks and Betty Younce of Toledo, OH; and Kathryn Stapleton and husband Claude of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Arnette was preceded in death by her parents, Roscoe Millsaps and Mamie Dishman Millsaps.

Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel Millsaps Arnette will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 8, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state, at the chapel, from 1:00 until 2:00 o’clock. Officiating will be Reverend Derick Wilson and Reverend Ray Greene. Burial will follow in the Greene Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening, October 7, 2013, from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock, at Hampton Funeral Service.

McDonald Barnard, D. Oct. 4, 2013

McDonald Barnard, age 95, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, passed away Friday, October 4, 2013.

He was born, raised, and attended school in Statesville, North Carolina. McDonald worked at Vance Soda Shop in Statesville in 1941 and later at Roses Department Store. He was drafted into the military and served in the Infantry in North Africa during World War II where he received the Infantry Badge, Bronze Medal, and Purple Heart. After the war, he attended King’s Business College in Charlotte. McDonald worked for Trailmobile in Charlotte for several years before transferring to Greensboro as office manager. Having never married, he enjoyed his sisters’ families and would take them with him on his annual vacations. Most of those vacations were spent in the North Carolina mountains. These trips led to his establishing permanent residency in Boone in 1957.

Mr. Barnard is survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Daisy Campbell Barnard; four sisters, Ethel Brewer, Nella Barnard, Helen Bell, and Lucile Westbrook, and two brothers, William Barnard and Royal Barnard.

Graveside services, with full military honors, provided by North Iredell American Legion Post 113, will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 8, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock, at Grassy Knob Baptist Church Cemetery, in Union Grove, North Carolina. Officiating will be Reverend Kenny Newberry.

Jennie Rich Kirby, age 46, of Old John’s River Road, Blowing Rock, passed away Friday, October 3, 2013.

Jennie is survived by her husband, Lloyd Alan Kirby of the home; one daughter, Jessica Kirby of the home; one son, Josh Kirby of Blowing Rock, her mother, Georgie Ruth Hatley Rich of Blowing Rock; four sisters, Carol Stanton and husband Dennis of Lenoir, Connie Rich and husband Derick Anderson of Purlear, Floretta Rich and companion Tom Hollar of Valle Crucis, and Melissa Fox of Banner Elk, and two brothers, James Rich and Alvin Rich, both of Blowing Rock.

Rosa Mains, D. Oct. 3, 2013

Rosa Velma Dean Mains, age 83, of Trade, TN, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at the home of her daughter Ellen Roark, 476 N. Flatwoods Rd., Creston, NC, surrounded by her family.

She was born July 22 1930 in Ashe County, Creston, North Carolina to the late Samuel Stewart and Emmer May Stewart. She was preceded in death by several sisters and brothers.

Rosa was a homemaker who had an unconditional love for her family which lead her to enjoy cooking, gardening, having beautiful flowers, being a seamstress and many more talents dedicated to serving her family. Her gardening skills led to her being honored with “Yard of The Week” several times in her community. She loved her family and will truly be missed by all who knew her. Rosa attended the Church of Deliverance and was active in the church as loved singing praises to her Lord .

She is survived by her husband of 58 years Arlie Spencer Mains, daughters, Cathy Diane Pickett and husband Kenny, Jane Ellen Roark and husband Eddie, Pam Isaacs and husband Greg, Sharon Corum and husband Chad and Karen “Cabbie” McClure and husband Randy; son Spencer Ray Mains; sister, Jeanetta Potter; grandchildren, Jessica Knight, Brittnai Mains, Jeremy Mains, Biancia Lambert, Matthew Lambert, Pamela Blevins, Christie Roark, Dacota Mains, Tenessia Isaacs Hayes, Devan Corum, Dustin Snyder, Joshua McClure and Jada McClure; five Great grandchildren several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 p.m. Sunday October 6, 2013 at Mountain City Funeral Home with funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Brother Bruce Miller and Brother Spencer Roark to officiate. The graveside Service and interment will follow from the Mains-Potter Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Devan Corum, Dustin Snyder, Chad Corum, Randy McClure, Greg Isaacs, Jesus Garcia, Travis Mains and Mathew Lambert. Honorary Pallbearers are Alvin Mains and Eddie Roark.

At other times, the family will receive friends at Mrs. Mains home 329 Hwy 67 N., Trade, TN 37691.
