Kathy Shook Cannon, D. Nov. 3, 2013
Katharine ‘Kathy’ Shook Cannon, age 60, of Banner Elk and Pompano Beach, Florida, passed away Sunday afternoon, November 3rd at her Banner Elk home.
Born April 4, 1953 in Washington, DC, she was the daughter of the late Colonel C. M. Shook and Della Mae Trivett Shook of the Grandfather Community. Kathy graduated from Watauga High School and Lees-McRae College. She was a former sales and advertising manager for YellowBook in Florida. Earlier in her varied career, she operated Neat Stuff Antique Shop in Watauga County, was Outreach Coordinator for Watauga County Project on Aging and a Professional Auctioneer.
She is survived by her husband, Alex Cannon; daughter Spirit Cannon; son, Alexi Cannon; two grandchildren: Ty and Alexi Cannon, all of Pompano Beach, FL; sister Sandra G. Shook and brother Bob Shook, both of Banner Elk; special cousins Colleen Bare and Lisa Shook, both of Banner Elk, and Cathy Masten; niece, Jeannine Taylor of Pennsylvania; brother-in-law, Richard Cannon of Michigan; and by other special aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Kathy was a “free spirit” who cared for so many others before herself.
The family will receive friends at the Shook home-place from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, 2013.

Joan Wood Wilson, D. Nov. 2, 2013
Joan Wood Wilson, age 76, of Zionville, passed away Saturday night, November 2nd, 2013 at Watauga Medical Center.
Mrs. Wilson is survived by her husband of 52 years, Bobby D. Wilson, of the home; one son, Scott R. Wilson and wife Tula of Lenoir; two grand-daughters, Hollie Wilson of Greensboro, and Kellie Wilson Parker and husband Stephen of Zionville; one brother, Buddy Wood of Boone; and one sister Cindy Metcalf, of Bath, NC. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Herman and Tina Cook Wood, and two sisters, Carolyn Sparks and Beth Carlson.
Funeral services for Joan Wood Wilson will be conducted Tuesday, November 5th, 2013 at 11:00 o’clock Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be Reverend Charles Foushee and Reverend Herbert McCoy. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Service.

Clara McKinney, D. Oct. 31, 2013
Clara Marcella McKinney, age 90, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday at Roan Highlands Nursing Home. A native of Avery County, NC, she was born one of 12 children on August 26, 1923. Marcella was a member of the Elk Park Christian Church. She loved her flowers and enjoyed gardening, knitting, making dolls and collecting angels and frogs. Most of all she loved talking of old times with friends.
Left to cherish her memory is one son; Warren Jerry Guinn and wife Sandra of Elk Park, two grandsons; Eric Guinn and wife Debbie of Newland and Perry Winters and wife Sheree of Johnson City, Tennessee, two granddaughters; Heather Turbyfill and husband Darrell of Roan Mountain, Tennessee, and Christy Winters of Elk Park, and one brother; Hansel Woods of Denver Colorado. She was preceded in death by one daughter; Brenda Winters, her parents; Lando and Emerette Pritchard Woods, four brothers; Arlie, James, Dallas and Cecil Woods, six sisters; Beatrice Heaton, Annie Holtsclaw, Julie Woods, Goldie Hicks, Leoda Holtsclaw and Rebecca Franklin.
Funeral services for Clara Marcella McKinney will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Elk Park Christian Church. Officiating will be Pastor Ryan Shirck and Rev. Chris Hughes. Burial will follow in the Elk Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday afternoon prior to the service from 1 until 2 o’clock.
Peggy Robinson Atzel, D. Oct. 31, 2013
Peggy Kathleen Robinson Atzel, age 88, of Blowing Rock, passed away Thursday morning, October 31st at the Devant Rehab and Extended Care Facility.
Survivors include her husband, Lou Atzel.
Memorial services for Peggy Robinson Atzel will be conducted Saturday at 12 noon at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Chapel, officiated by Pastor Cindy Banks.
A reception will follow services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, 170 Councill St., Boone, NC 28607, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
